When the 2025 NFL Draft began on Thursday, April 26, football fans everywhere believed Shedeur Sanders would be drafted within the first round by either the New York Giants or the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, fate would have other plans.
Shedeur Sanders slipped from the first round, and then the second, third, and fourth. But with the 144th overall pick in the fifth round, the Cleveland Browns finally called his name, giving him his long-awaited NFL home.

With the 144th overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Sanders.
Sanders hasn't posted anything about the big news yet, but fans, commentators, and haters alike have undoubtedly tuned in to see whether the confident 23-year-old would be selected.
On his Twitch live stream, Sanders could be seen celebrating with his friends and family while wearing a Browns ballcap.

Before the draft began on Thursday night, many expected Sanders to be selected in the first round by either the New York Giants or the Pittsburgh Steelers, who both could use the additional depth. However, both teams passed on him.
Sanders and his crew hoped day two would be different, considering the Cleveland Browns had picks 33 and 36. They also passed on Sanders.
Fans of the New Orleans Saints, whose current quarterback, Derek Carr, could be out with an injury this season, also expressed their confusion when their team's owners selected Tyler Shough at pick 40 over Sanders.
The third and fourth rounds were no better for him, either. With the 28th pick of the round and 92nd overall, the Seattle Seahawks chose Jalen Milroe from the University of Alabama.
However, the athlete remained hopeful, saying on Twitch, “God don’t make mistakes. We have faith in God no matter what. Whatever it is."

Prior to being selected by the Cleveland Browns, President Donald J. Trump slammed NFL owners and called them "stupid" for skipping over Sanders.
“What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID?” Trump wrote before praising Sanders and his father, Deion Sanders, for their ability on the field.
“Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He’s also a very good coach, streetwise and smart! Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for Greatness. He should be ‘picked’ IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck, Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father," he finished.

Stephen A. Smith, host of the popular sports show "First Take," posted about the Sanders' draft stock and called it a "disgrace."
"How the h-ll is [Shedeur Sanders] not off the board [and] not drafted yet," he wrote. "Y'all still think this doesn't have anything to do with teams hating on [his dad, Deion]. This kid is a first-rounder. In a different way, this is [like Colin Kaepernick] all over again. Being kept out. A d-mn disgrace. I don't care what anyone says!"
