Sean "Diddy" Combs' prison life is said to be a far cry from the lavish lifestyle he once lived prior to being indicted and arrested last September.

The rapper, who has been in detention at the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York ahead of his trial, is now using $1 cans of mackerel as currency to buy items in the facility.

Sean "Diddy" Combs is set to be tried in May on sex crime charges and potentially faces life imprisonment if found guilty.

After years of living lavishly on his massive wealth, Diddy has reportedly been reduced to using $1 cans of mackerel, also known as "macks" by inmates, as currency in the prison he is being detained in ahead of his trial.

The music mogul was arrested last September and is facing charges of one count of racketeering conspiracy, two counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

Diddy was then transferred to the special housing unit of the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York, a facility infamous for its harsh conditions.

According to a report by the New York Times, despite his riches, Diddy is limited to only spending up to $180 every fortnight, just like other inmates at the notorious facility.

The funds are typically deposited in the prison's commissary account by the inmates' loved ones, and in Diddy's case, it may be any of his older children or a representative who has access to his finances.

Within the MDC, Diddy is housed in 4 North, a fourth-floor dormitory-style unit that accommodates around 20 male inmates.

This part of the facility is where some of the most high-profile inmates are held ahead of their trials, including convicted crypto fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried prior to his transfer.

Every day, Diddy and the other inmates face compulsory daily check-ins at different times of the day as part of the prison protocol.

Baths are taken in stalls while their feeding is carried out in a communal area. At other times, the inmates can access the gym or watch movies via a general TV or on personal tabs purchased at the commissary.

Meanwhile, the embattled rapper is allowed regular phone calls, which are restricted to 15 minutes at each time.

Visitors can also visit Diddy at the facility on Tuesday, although the rapper reportedly meets with his lawyers far more frequently.

Diddy is set to be tried in May over multiple sex crime charges listed in his federal indictment. The indictment named four alleged victims of the rapper involved in his now infamous "freak offs."

One of the victims is the rapper's ex-girlfriend, Cassandra "Cassie" Ventura, whom Diddy was seen assaulting in a 2016 viral video that swirled online last year. She would be testifying under her real name as a witness for the prosecutors during the trial.

The identities of the other victims remain unknown to the public but have been revealed to Diddy and his lawyers after their motion to unveil the names was granted by the court.

Later this month, questionnaires will be shared with potential jurors ahead of being questioned by the prosecutors and defense during the jury selection process.

If Diddy is found guilty of the charges, he potentially faces life imprisonment on the racketeering charge, as well as a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years for the sex trafficking charges.

Ahead of the trial, Diddy's lawyers argued that prosecutors shouldn't be allowed to bring up any witnesses other than the four alleged victims named in the rapper's federal indictment.

"The Court should require the government to try the case it charged and prove that case to the jury beyond a reasonable doubt," Diddy's lawyers said in a filing obtained by the Daily Mail.

They added, "The government should not be permitted to pollute the trial with decades of dirt and invite a conviction based on propensity evidence with no proper purpose by painting Mr. Combs as a bad guy who must have committed the charged crimes."

Diddy's legal team also claimed that the prosecutors were trying to undermine their defense by withholding the growing witness list until April 18, just two weeks before the jury selection will take place.

Meanwhile, Diddy recently scored a legal win in a $30 million lawsuit brought against him.

The rapper was sued by a former associate, Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones, who claimed that he was groomed, abused, and exploited by the embattled rapper during the time that they worked together.

Some of the charges that Lil Rod brought against Diddy have now been dismissed by Judge J. Paul Oetken of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York in a 31-page ruling.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the judge struck out the racketeering accusation along with the breach of contract claim, which referenced Lil Rod's claims that he was stiffed on $50,000 in payment, publishing shares, and royalties for his work on Diddy's "The Love Album: Off the Grid."

Three other claims related to infliction of emotional distress were also dismissed alongside another cause of action in the suit related to the Trafficking Victims Protection Act.

The order also reprimanded Jones' attorney, Tyrone Blackburn, and described his conduct regarding the motion as "unsettling."
