Frustration mounted as users began drawing parallels to problematic beauty ideals of decades past.
"I cannot go through another fashion cycle of stick skinny body standards and ultra low rise jeans. Just can't," one person shared, while another added, "I feel like the size we cannot normalize."
A more pointed comment read, "Yikes we did heroin chic once we don't need to try it again," referencing the controversial '90s aesthetic that glorified extreme thinness.
"I'm concerned about Bella's weight. not trying to be rude," someone else wrote.
Another added, "This is what happens when your mom says eat a few almonds when you are hungry."

However, not everyone agreed with the criticism.
Defenders of Hadid pushed back on the negativity, urging others to stop commenting on women’s bodies.
"It's 2025 and we are still judging women's bodies," one user typed, while another wrote, "Why is someone else being skinny so triggering for everyone?! You look how you want to look, let her look how she wants to look."
Bella Hadid Gets Candid About Weight Fluctuations

Hadid herself has previously addressed her fluctuating weight and body image struggles.
In an interview with PEOPLE, she opened up about the changes in her body and how they are often out of her control. "I have lost weight and gained weight. My weight fluctuates so much. I really didn't mean to [lose weight]. Like I want boobs. I want my a** back. But it's not my fault."
She continued, "My weight fluctuates and so does everybody's and I think that if people are gonna judge, that's the worst you can possibly do because everybody is different."
The supermodel also attributed part of her weight loss to intense fitness and dietary routines.
"I worked out so hard and everybody is like, 'Oh, she looks so skinny blah, blah, blah.' But I think that if you just stick to something you can really achieve so much. I've been eating hard protein every day and working out for three hours every day."
She added, "It's crazy but I think that you know if you set your mind to something I think you can succeed."
Hadid Reflects On Body Image And Mental Health

In a 2022 interview with i-D Magazine, she revealed that her struggles date back to her youth.
"Growing up, I thought it was normal that I had this chronic anxiety and this disassociation, crying every day and not knowing who I was," she said before also reflecting on the factors that contributed to her struggles.
"Whether it was eating disorders or smoking a pack of Marlboros since the age of fourteen, I'm like, 'Oh, this is what all of the kids are doing.' I realized that maybe that was me trying to figure out why I felt that way," she added. "And in reality, all I needed was therapy."
In discussing her experiences with body dysmorphia, she noted, "During that part of my life, I was so out of body, disassociating so much... I was so confused by what people saw of me."
Bella Hadid Gets Candid About Mental Health, Lyme Battle, And The Pressures Of Fashion Industry

In a revealing interview with Vogue, Hadid opened up about the toll the fashion industry has taken on her over the years.
“To have to wake up every morning with this brain - it's not cute,” she told the publication in 2022. “So now everything that I do in my personal life is literally to make sure that my mental state stays above water."
Her words reflect a growing movement among public figures to speak openly about mental health in high-pressure industries. “Fashion can make you or break you. And if it makes you, you have to make a conscious effort every day for it not to break you. There's always a bit of grief in love,” Hadid added.
As the online chatter continues, Hadid’s past reflections serve as a reminder that public perception often lacks context, and that behind every headline or viral comment, there’s a real person navigating their own challenges.
