She said, "Luigi Mangione's murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America."

Bondi continued, "After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump's agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again."

Bondi's statement serves as one of President Donald Trump's administration's first actions toward the death penalty after he issued an executive order soon after taking office in January directing the attorney general to "pursue the death penalty for all crimes of a severity demanding its use."

In the executive order, Trump asserted that restoring capital punishment was essential for justice and public safety.

He also reversed former President Biden's moratorium on federal executions and condemned the latter to commute 37 death row sentences.

The order ensured states had access to lethal injection drugs, called for overturning Supreme Court rulings that restricted capital punishment, and mandated strict imprisonment conditions for violent offenders.

It also prioritized prosecuting violent crime and strengthening law enforcement coordination.

Another person shared, "So a cop can kill innocent people and just gets off with it and then we have to hear how hard it is on their mental health but someone kills a CEO who is ripping people off and they give him the death penalty. Joke of a country."

A fifth netizen wrote, "Tragic all around, but let's not ignore the deeper issue. Luigi Mangione's actions, while extreme and unjustifiable, shine a harsh light on a broken healthcare system where profit often trumps patient care. This case should be a wake-up call for reform, not just punishment."

On December 23, 2024, Mangione pleaded not guilty to murder and terrorism charges in a New York court.

He faces 11 state charges, including first-degree murder and murder as an act of terrorism, which carry a mandatory life sentence without parole if convicted.

Additionally, federal prosecutors charged him with using a firearm to commit murder and interstate stalking, resulting in death, offenses that could lead to the death penalty.

Authorities allege Mangione shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Thompson in Manhattan before fleeing.

He was later arrested at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania. Both state and federal cases are to proceed simultaneously.

Mangione has received massive support and a cult-like following since his arrest and detention.

The support for the murder suspect has been linked to public dissatisfaction with the health insurance industry and claim denial practices. The case has also intensified calls for healthcare reform.

Due to the growing number of people supporting Mangione, his defense team created a website to provide information and answer questions about his case.

In February, Mangione released a statement on the website thanking his supporters. He said, "I am overwhelmed by - and grateful for - everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support. Powerfully, this support has transcended political, racial, and even class divisions, as mail has flooded MDC from across the country, and around the globe."

The 26-year-old concluded, "While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive. Thank you again to everyone who took the time to write. I look forward to hearing more in the future."
