Ben Affleck Reportedly 'Over The Narrative That He Was Grumpy' During Marriage To Jennifer Lopez

Ben Affleck recently opened up about his split from Jennifer Lopez, calling it "embarrassing."

Although he initially stayed silent, a report has revealed that the actor addressed their separations in hopes of moving on from the rumors and ending the "narrative" that he was the bad guy.

This comes as Jennifer Lopez purchased a new home in Hidden Hills after she and Ben Affleck finalized their divorce.

Affleck's recent candid remarks about his divorce took many by surprise, as he has always been known for keeping his personal life out of the public.

According to a source who spoke to the Daily Mail, the 52-year-old actor was tired of being portrayed as the villain while Lopez was seen as the victim.

The insider explained that Affleck wanted to set the record straight and finally put the speculation to rest.

"He is so over this divorce and the narrative that he was grumpy and that Jen was a victim," the source said. "It has been a year since he left, and he is hoping that speaking up will stop the constant questions."

The insider added, "He is ready to focus on what actually matters to him. His career and his family. This gave Ben closure, which is what he needed."

The source shared that Affleck felt compelled to address their divorce after Lopez's candid remarks about the breakup in Interview Magazine last October.

At the time, Lopez described the split as the "hardest time in her life," saying her "whole f-cking world exploded" but ultimately led her to "where she wanted to go."

"Ben had never planned to address their divorce because it is a private matter, and he respects Jen," the insider shared. "But after she spoke about him to Interview magazine, he decided it was time to say what he had to say in the nicest way possible."

The insider shared that Affleck is also hoping their breakup won't overshadow the release of their upcoming film "Kiss of the Spider Woman," which they worked on together.

This week, it was announced that the movie musical will hit theaters in the fall. A source revealed that Affleck is focused on securing the film's distribution deal.

They said, "He genuinely wants this project to succeed and not be "overshadowed by their drama which happened to 'Unstoppable.'"

In an interview with British GQ, Ben Affleck opened up about his split from Jennifer Lopez.

Describing the breakup as "embarrassing," Affleck reflected on the differences in how he and Lopez approached fame.

"There are a lot of people who I think have handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have, Jennifer among them," he shared. "My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers. As happens in relationships, you don't always have the same attitude towards these things."

When discussing their split, the "Gone Girl" star dismissed any notions of drama, stating, "There's no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue. I guess there's a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something."

He continued: "But honestly, like I said, the truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting. It's just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do."

During the chat with the publication, Affleck emphasized that there was no single defining moment that led to his split from Lopez, admitting that discussing it felt "vulnerable."

"As you get older, this is true for me, I assume it's true for most people, there is no 'So-and-so did this' or 'This was the big event,'" he explained.

Affleck continued, "It's really, it sounds more like a couple's therapy session, which – you would tune out of someone else's couple's therapy after a while."

Despite the personal nature of their separation, he made it clear: "I have nothing but respect for Jennifer."

In 2021, Affleck made it clear that he valued keeping his personal life private, especially regarding his relationship with Lopez.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, he explained, "'You can write conjecture about it, but one of the harder lessons that I have learned is that it's not wise to share everything with the world."

The actor added: "There are some things which are private and intimate and have meaning in terms of their intimacy by dint of the fact that they're not shared with the rest of the world."

Ultimately, Affleck emphasized his commitment to boundaries, saying, "I don't know if it's good or bad. I don't."

He continued, "I know that I feel more comfortable having those healthy boundaries in my life around which, in a friendly and straightforward way, I tell you, I just don't want to be talking about my personal relationship in the newspaper. I'm going to exercise a little restraint."
