With Game of Thrones coming to an end this year, fans of Westeros were looking forward to the upcoming spinoffs. One focusing on the “Age of Heroes” set thousands of years before the well-known conflicts between the Lannisters and the Starks and one depicting the rise of the Targaryens were announced, keeping the fire for the fantasy realm alive.
However, Deadline reports that the prequel series about the “Age of Heroes” is no longer going forward at HBO. The project starred Naomi Watts and the pilot shot this summer, but showrunner Jane Goldman was informed by HBO that they would be passing on the project. According to Deadline,
“Word of the Watts-led pilot, penned by Goldman and directed by S.J. Clarkson, not going forward comes after a lengthy post-production, which included re-editing of the initial cut after it was not well received, and rumors about issues during filming in Northern Ireland.”
Not only that, but the showrunners behind Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who were previously tapped to create the next Star Wars, have also stepped away from that planned trilogy as well.
Seems like the Game of Thrones monkey paw has lost its magic.
