The year was 1995, and while most of us were getting down to Oasis and Montell Jordan, a young John Mayer was playing his Connecticut high school's graduation with his band.

Mayer shared a video of himself strumming his guitar and singing as tons of seniors prepared to face the challenges of the future.

"June 1995, Fairfield, CT. That’s me in my high school band playing our graduation ceremony," Mayor wrote in the caption of his Instagram post.

The "Gravity" singer continued his message by explaining that he was a bad student that did not get a chance to throw his grad cap up in the air.

"I didn’t actually get my diploma that day," Mayor said, "as I was a terrible student who was only interested in playing the guitar and writing songs."

Little did he know that he would write and record one of his greatest masterpieces ("Your Body Is A Wonderland") just six years after this video was shot.

"So let this be a lesson to all young people everywhere," John joked, "if you follow your dreams and stay focused, one day you too can go to summer school."

Days before he shared the throwback video, he testified in court against an alleged stalker.

We're told Mayer took the stand and described the harassment he has had to endure over the past few months. Our sources say his testimony was brief and outlined what he had filed in the restraining order request.

The judge presiding over the court granted Mayer a 5-year restraining order.
