Newly released details shed light on the tragic deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, who were found dead in their New Mexico home on Wednesday, February 26.

Hackman and Arakawa were found in separate parts of the home, with Hackman fully clothed and a pair of sunglasses lying nearby, details that could suggest he had fallen. Arakawa’s body, however, was found showing signs of “mummification,” indicating she may have been deceased for days, if not longer.

Adding to the eerie scene, a deceased German Shepherd was also found in Gene Hackman's home.

According to a search warrant obtained by PEOPLE, authorities discovered various medications inside the residence, including an unspecified thyroid medication, Tylenol, and diltiazem, which is a drug commonly prescribed for high blood pressure.

The warrant further notes that Arakawa was found in the bathroom near a bottle of pills.

Speaking on "Today," Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza acknowledged the complexity of the case, saying it’s possible the couple had been dead for weeks. He emphasized that investigators are “trying to put together a timeline,” but admitted it would be a “challenge” due to the couple’s extremely private lifestyle.

While authorities have ruled out obvious signs of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning, Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya did not entirely dismiss the possibility.

“That was a home with natural gas in it, so it could have [played a factor],” Moya said on "Today." “There’s a lot of unanswered [questions] there. When we arrived, we made sure our people as well as the sheriff were safe, and there was nothing that we found. We also went back again yesterday to do another round of searches … and we didn’t find anything as well.”

Hackman, widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation, was a two-time Academy Award winner, earning Oscars for his performances in "The French Connection" and "Unforgiven." Over his decades-long career, he received a total of five Oscar nominations before stepping away from acting in the early 2000s.

Arakawa, a classical pianist, had been married to Hackman since 1991. The couple lived a quiet life away from Hollywood in New Mexico, where they kept a low profile in their later years.

As investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the legendary actor and his wife, new details have emerged, including the discovery of two dogs found alive and in “healthy” condition at their Santa Fe, New Mexico home.

According to a search-warrant affidavit obtained by Variety from state authorities, deputies encountered “a healthy dog running loose on the property” and “another healthy dog near the deceased female.” However, a third dog was not as fortunate.

The affidavit states that “a deceased dog [was] laying 10-15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom.”

Hackman’s body was found in a mudroom. Meanwhile, Arakawa was discovered in a bathroom, with a space heater nearby.

The affidavit described additional findings in the home, including “the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female, the male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak.”

One deputy noted that the space heater in the bathroom may have fallen if Arakawa had “abruptly fell to the ground,” suggesting a possible accident. The report also stated that Arakawa “showed obvious signs of death, body decomposition, bloating in her face and mummification in both hands and feet.”

"There's no indication that anybody was moving about the house or doing anything different, so it's very hard to determine if they both passed at the same time or how close they passed together," Mendoza said, per the New York Post.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation into the couple’s deaths. While no immediate cause of death has been determined, authorities are working to establish a timeline. As officials piece together what led to the tragic discovery, questions remain about what caused their deaths and how two of their pets managed to survive while a third did not.
