Matthew Lawrence is reflecting on the only time he says he ever got in trouble on a film or television set, and it allegedly involved Gabrielle Union.
During a recent episode of the "Magical Rewind" podcast, Matthew Lawrence revealed that Gabrielle Union reported him to the director and studio while filming their 1999 TV movie "H-E Double Hockey Sticks."

According to Lawrence, the situation stemmed from a disagreement about rehearsing lines together. He claimed that Union approached him to run through their scenes, but he declined the offer, which he says led to her taking the matter to production.
“There was this one moment where, and, again, I’m oblivious, I had no idea, and [Gabrielle] wanted to rehearse. And I was like, ‘No, I’m good," he recalled, per Entertainment Weekly. "And she got angry and went and reported me to the director and the studio.”
Lawrence described the experience as the only time in his career that he was ever formally reprimanded for his behavior on set. “Usually I’m, like, the advocate, and I’m fighting for kids and, like, you know, women’s rights," he said. "This is the only time in my life when I was called into the office for something I did on set. And I had no clue.”
Why Matthew Lawrence Declined To Rehearse

Looking back, Lawrence explained that his acting approach at the time was to avoid over-rehearsing in order to keep his performance feeling fresh and natural when the cameras rolled.
“At that point, in my mind, now I can do whatever, and nothing’s gonna faze me, [but] at that point in my mind, I really loved memorizing the lines, knowing all the beats,” the actor said on the podcast. “But hated running it, cause it felt like it took all the freshness out of it.”
However, he admitted that his perspective has changed over time, and he no longer insists on that approach.
Union’s Rising Stardom At The Time

"H-E Double Hockey Sticks" premiered on ABC in October 1999 as part of "The Wonderful World of Disney" series. In the film, Lawrence starred as a hockey player who becomes the target of a young devil, played by podcast co-host Will Friedle.
That same year, Union’s star power was on the rise, thanks to her roles in hit teen comedies like "10 Things I Hate About You" and "She’s All That." Lawrence recalled that everyone on set knew she was on the path to major success.
“She’s so beautiful and she just has this, like, aura of just confidence,” podcast co-host Sabrina Bryan added during the discussion.
Cheryl Burke Reflects On Divorce From Matthew Lawrence, Wonders If Financial Dynamic Played A Role

Cheryl Burke recently opened up about her split from ex-husband Matthew Lawrence, revealing that she believes financial dynamics and timing may have contributed to their breakup.
Last year, during an appearance on the "I Do, Part 2" podcast, the "Dancing with the Stars" alum reflected on the ups and downs of her relationship with Lawrence, whom she was married to for nearly three years before filing for divorce in February 2022. Burke suggested that their personal and professional lives were not aligned, which may have created tension in their marriage.
Burke and Lawrence first crossed paths in 2006 when his older brother, Joey Lawrence, competed on "Dancing with the Stars" during its third season. At the time, Burke was at the height of her success in the ballroom dance world.
"I was just at the height of the success of 'Dancing with the Stars,'" Burke recalled. "So we were on tour. We did two seasons a year, two tours a year. So I was just like working all around the clock, barely had a day off."
After dating for about a year, the two called it quits but reconnected in 2017, eventually getting married.
Did Finances Play A Role In The Split?

When Burke and Lawrence rekindled their romance, she noted that the "Boy Meets World" actor wasn’t working as much at the time. However, she insists she was fully aware of the situation before they got married.
"I kind of knew what I was getting into. That’s just my personality. I am never going to not make money," she explained. "That comes from my mother, who is a rags-to-riches story. I’ve seen her hustle and was raised with her hustle. That’s who I am, ultimately."
Burke also admitted that she takes pride in her financial independence and doesn’t feel any shame in being the primary breadwinner. However, she acknowledges that the imbalance in earnings may have had an impact on their relationship.
"I'm not going to speak for him," Burke prefaced, "I'm not here to badmouth him whatsoever. But I believe that there is this gender role where a man may feel a little emasculated when he doesn't make the majority of the money, and I think that may have taken a toll."
Burke and Lawrence finalized their divorce in September 2022, and both have since moved on.
