Kanye West Settles Legal Battle With Music Publisher EMI Over Record Deal

Kanye West has reached a deal to end his nasty battle with his music publisher EMI over his record deal.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, the rapper and his music publisher have informed the court of the deal. The agreement will bring an end to the dueling lawsuits they filed.

The documents note, “PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that Plaintiffs Please Gimme My Publishing, Inc., West Brands, LLC, Kanye West, and Ye World Publishing, Inc. (the “Plaintiffs”) and Defendants EMI April Music, Inc. and EMI Blackwood Music, Inc. (the “Defendants”) (collectively, the “Parties”) have reached an agreement in principle to settle the above-captioned action in its entirety. The Parties expect to draft and finalize a settlement agreement within ninety (90) days.”

Per their deal, all claims will be dismissed, and the case will be closed.

Earlier this year, Kanye West sued song publisher EMI claiming his deal was unfair and illegal and wanted it voided. He believed the deal should have expired in 2010 and sued for ownership of his music catalog.

EMI then filed their own lawsuit against Kanye for his attempts to get out of his deal. They want a court order declaring the contract to be valid.

Back in March, West informed the court he was trying to settle the case outside of court.

Kanye and EMI jointly filed documents asking the judge to stay the case. They asked for an extension stating, “they wish to explore the potential for a resolution of this action, and believe a stay would benefit the parties and the Court by enabling the parties to engage in meaningful discussions in an attempt to resolve this action without having to incur the burden and expense of litigation and motion practice."

The time appears to have worked out for Kanye.
