Alec Baldwin's Reality Show 'The Baldwins' To Cover 'Rust' Tragedy

It seems that Alec Baldwin is not letting the “Rust” drama go anytime soon.
Months after a judge dismissed the criminal charges against him with prejudice, he sued Santa Fe officials for malicious prosecution, alleging that his civil rights were violated with the case.
New details about his upcoming reality series, "The Baldwins," emerged on Monday, January 27. A trailer revealed that he and his family also discuss the “Rust” tragedy during the show.
What Happened On The Set Of ‘Rust’?
“Rust” was a Western film written and directed by Joel Souza, with creative input from Baldwin that earned him a producer credit. That producing role would spark controversy later on when he was tied to the death of late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
In October 2021, Baldwin, who also starred in the independent film, was rehearsing a scene that had him pulling out his gun for the camera. On one take, the gun went off, and a single round left the gun. Souza was hospitalized, and while Hutchins was airlifted to a medical facility in Albuquerque, she did not survive.
Charges Were Dropped Against Alec Baldwin In July 2024
In January 2023, Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were charged with involuntary manslaughter. Charges against Baldwin were dropped in April 2023 and reinstated in January 2024. In July 2024, only three days into the trial, a witness revealed that they had worked with the prosecution to put evidence from the Gutierrez-Reed case under a new case number, thus hiding it from the defense team.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer determined this to be a violation of the Brady rule and dropped charges against Baldwin. Despite an appeal, lead prosecutor Kari Morrissey eventually agreed to drop the case against Baldwin in December 2024. The following month, Baldwin filed his own lawsuit alleging malicious prosecution.
Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was the only person sentenced to time in prison for Hutchins’ death. In March 2024, she was sentenced to 18 months behind bars. She later reached a plea deal to an unrelated gun charge that took place a few weeks before the shooting, earning her another 18 months of probation.
Police have never been able to determine how live rounds ended up on a film set.
‘The Baldwins’ Will Touch On ‘Rust’ Tragedy
It is impossible to know from the trailer just how much time will be dedicated to the “Rust” shooting, but it has played a significant part in the actor’s life for the past few years. In the trailer, Alec’s wife, Hilaria Baldwin, reflects on the shooting and how it affected Halyna Hutchins’ young son.
“A son lost his mom in the most unthinkable tragedy,” she says in the trailer. “This is never something to forget … and we’re trying to parent through it.”
There are also clips of the “Saturday Night Live” alum getting emotional throughout the trailer. “Honestly, from the bottom of my soul. I don’t know where I’d be if I didn’t have you and these kids,” he tells his wife.
