Pop star Sabrina Carpenter has come under fire over her sexy image being "offensive" and a detriment to women's rights.
The scathing comments were made by English songwriting and record production trio Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman, who have worked with the likes of Sam Fox and Kylie Minogue.
The trio also had much to say about Sabrina Carpenter's music, calling her lyrics "lazy."
A Trio Of Pop Music Producers Have Criticized The Singer's Sexy Image
In a new interview with The Sun, Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman criticized singer Sabrina Carpenter's rise in the music industry, specifically focusing on her "sexy" image.
Waterman stated that he finds the singer's wardrobe choices "offensive" and questioned why she chooses to sexualize her image while possessing the raw talent needed to stand out.
He also claimed that female singers dressing "as little as possible" was not the norm 30 years ago, adding that artists from their era would have been "killed" for doing "half of what is being done now."
As a follow-up, Aitken commented that seeing Carpenter and other women adopting this style to promote their music is a setback for women's rights.
He told the outlet, "They've [women] won all of their freedoms and their rights, women. They fought for everything they've got and now they're throwing it away, is the way I would look at it."
Sabrina Carpenter's Lyrics Were Slammed As 'Lazy'
Elsewhere in the conversation, Waterman also stated that Carpenter's decision to dress sexually could make it difficult for her to gain respect.
"It's just crazy. If you're asking to be respected, don't come on in a G-string," he said.
As for Stock, he went after the singer's lyrics, saying how she talked about sex in some of her songs was "lazy."
"I would never try to write a lyric that said anything specific on a sexual level," Stock noted.
He continued, "You'd always be allegorical or allude to it somehow. So I don't like that. I think it's a bad show and it's lazy. You're going to grab some form of attention by doing that."
Sources Claim Sabrina Carpenter's Management Guided Her To Embrace A 'Sexpot' Image
Stock, Aitken, and Waterman aren't the only ones to comment on Carpenter's image. Industry sources have also claimed that her provocative image played a significant role in her meteoric rise over the past year, especially after initially struggling to make an impact in the music scene.
"She didn't connect with a mass audience, and drastic changes needed to be made," an insider shared with the Daily Mail.
According to the insider, the singer's eventual move to Island Records in 2021 led to the transformation now being observed.
They claimed her new management pushed her to move away from her "everyday image" and revamp herself into a "sexpot."
Switching From Her 'Wholesome Image' Was 'Very Uncomfortable' For The Singer
The switch from her previous style reportedly didn't come easy for Carpenter, who had grown accustomed to the "wholesome image" she cultivated during her time at Disney.
"It made her very uncomfortable as behind closed doors she wears sweats, little make up, and likes to stay home and watch Netflix," the insider shared.
They added, "To suddenly be showing skin and flaunting it while singing provocative lyrics was initially a challenge. She had to embrace her acting skills, but it worked."
Sabrina Carpenter Was Allegedly Ready To Do Everything To Establish Herself
Another source claimed that the transition worked because the singer was ready to do everything to boost herself.
"Sabrina knows she has to just let go and accept that she will have to become a commercial product to establish herself," the insider mentioned. "It is no different to what Britney, Gaga or Katy Perry did. They know what will sell and she will do that until she is at a place where she is able to call the shots."
A different insider said it also helped that the singer had the talent and worked with skilled producers who provided her with great songs.
"Producers actually gave her good music and now she is more adult, more sexed up," said the source.
"[But] if the talent wasn't there, she'd be forgotten, but she is now a bonafide pop star who is also being considered for roles in major movies," the source added.
