Shawn Levy recently hit commercial success with 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” and it looks like he is looking to repeat the magic in a galaxy far, far away. Doing so will be no easy feat, as there hasn’t been a “Star Wars” movie in theaters since 2019, when “The Rise of Skywalker” wrapped up the 9-episode-long Skywalker Saga, beginning in 1977 with “A New Hope.”

Levy’s “Star Wars” film was first announced in 2022, with his “The Adam Project” collaborator Jonathan Tropper set to write the script. It is not clear where or when the project is set, but The Hollywood Reporter revealed that it is intended to be a standalone movie when they announced Gosling’s casting.

Gosling might actually be a solid choice for the role, as he recently wrapped filming on another space movie: Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s “Project Hail Mary.”

Like many movies and TV shows, Shawn Levy was forced to stop working on his “Star Wars” project due to the WGA writer’s strike.  In September 2023, Levy revealed that he was forced to take a hiatus from the Lucasfilm project while promoting his Netflix limited series “All The Light We Cannot See.”

During an interview at Collider’s TIFF media studio, he told reporter Steve Weintraub, “We were just starting the process of developing my movie, and the writer strike happened,” adding, “So we are in that holding pattern that so much of our industry is in."

The hiatus also hurt his “Real Steel” series. “Still, as I told you, I want it as badly as the lovers of Real Steel want it, so alive, but paused,” he added.

In a December 2022 interview with Collider, Levy revealed that he had been talking to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy “for a while now” about making a “Star Wars’ movie but confessed that “There’s a lot of work to be done” before his script will make it to the big screen.

“Yes. I’m very aware of the ratio of filmmakers who get to the starting line. As you know, Steve, I’m a student of the business, and so of course I note that,” Levy said at the time. “But here’s my attitude: I have this golden ticket into a galaxy far away, and I’m going to devote myself to developing a screenplay that gives me the privilege of making this movie.”

“I don’t attach to things because it looks good in a trade announcement. I attach to things that I intend to make. And you better believe I’m not going to squander this juiciest of opportunities,” he continued. “I’m going to work my a– off. But first, I got to work my a– off on making Deadpool. So it’s definitely longer-term planning, but I want to be one of the movies that gets to the starting line because these are rare opportunities, and I want to make the most of it.”

“I’ve been talking with Kathy Kennedy for a while now, and she’s been aware of my passion for this franchise for a long time. The stars finally aligned, and she came to me and was like, let’s do something here,” he added. “And that’s as much as I can say. But this is definitely development and not yet close to prep. So there’s a lot of work to be done.”

In an interesting twist, Ryan Gosling almost starred in “Wolf Man,” the latest Universal Pictures and Blumhouse monster movie. There were a lot of changes made from the movie’s announcement to its release, including a change in director.

Although Gosling is still credited as a producer, his starring role as Blake was ultimately given to Christopher Abbott of “Kraven the Hunter” and “Poor Things” fame. In an interview with CinemaBlend, director Leigh Whannell revealed the changes in the lead actor all came down to scheduling.

"It's pretty much the same thing. It was really, you know ... when I was working with Ryan, it was the similar story that you see now. It was the isolation, the same characters. It's just that so much time went by, there were these strikes and all this stuff happened,” Whannell explained. “All of a sudden Ryan's schedule changed. But I'm happy we got Christopher Abbott. He is so great in the role. I think he brought this to life better than I could have hoped for.”

“Star Wars” fans have their fingers crossed that Gosling's schedule will still be free to allow him to make his mark on a galaxy far, far away!
