Naomi Watts is sharing a hilariously intimate moment from her relationship with Billy Crudup.
Watts and Crudup first met on the set of their Netflix series "Gypsy" in 2017. While sparks flew immediately, the couple kept their relationship under wraps for years, only making their red-carpet debut in 2022. In 2023, they sparked engagement rumors, which they later confirmed by announcing they had tied the knot.
Now, in her newly released book, Dare I Say It: Everything I Wish I’d Known About Menopause, Naomi Watts reflects on her past. The "King Kong" actress recalls a cheeky comment Billy Crudup made about his testicles that comforted and amused her during an early stage of their romance.
Billy Crudup’s Testicle Joke Takes Center Stage in Naomi Watts’ Story
In her newly released book, Watts opened up about an early and vulnerable moment in her relationship with Crudup. At the time, she had just begun hormone therapy for menopause and was wearing an estrogen patch to manage her symptoms.
“I was worried that if he saw [the patch], he would realize it meant I was menopausal: no longer a vibrant, fertile being,” she wrote, per Page Six, admitting she felt self-conscious about the adhesive marks left behind on her skin.
On one occasion, as the couple prepared for an intimate evening at Crudup’s place, Watts spent a significant amount of time scrubbing her skin “raw” in the bathroom, desperate to remove any evidence of the patch. When Crudup asked if everything was OK, she finally confessed her worries about menopause.
Naomi Watts Shares Billy Crudup’s Hilarious Testicle Comment
Rather than reacting with discomfort, Crudup surprised her with empathy and humor. “A smile broke over his face. He seemed very relieved that the issue wasn’t a lack of desire,” Watts shared. He reassured her by saying, “I think it’s great you’re taking care of yourself. How can I help?”
To lighten the mood further, the "Morning Show" star shared his own experience with aging, stating, “Hey, if it makes you feel better: I’ve got gray hairs on my balls.”
Watts revealed that this unexpected quip left her laughing and feeling at ease. “To this day, those remain the most romantic words I’ve ever heard onscreen or off,” she joked in the book. “And that includes the script of every movie I’ve ever been in, and even this same man’s very loving marriage proposal, which came seven years later.”
Naomi Watts Reflects on David Lynch’s Impact on Her Hollywood Career
Naomi Watts nearly left Hollywood behind before her longtime friend and collaborator David Lynch cast her in the iconic 2001 noir "Mulholland Drive."
The Oscar-nominated actress opened up about her struggles and Lynch’s pivotal role in her career during an appearance on "Live With Kelly and Mark" on Tuesday. Lynch, who passed away last week at the age of 78, was not only instrumental in Watts’ professional breakthrough but also in keeping her in America to pursue her Hollywood dreams.
Watts revealed that before landing the role in "Mulholland Drive," she had been on the verge of returning to Australia, where she had started her acting career after moving from the United Kingdom as a child. “I wouldn’t have stayed had I not met David Lynch,” the 56-year-old actress shared. “The chips were down, it was 10 years into flunking auditions.”
Naomi Watts Promotes Her New Book
Promoting her new nonfiction book, "Dare I Say It," Watts explained her frustration with her stalled career at the time. Despite having landed roles in the 1995 comic book adaptation "Tank Girl" and the 1996 horror sequel "Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering," she struggled to find consistent work.
“Nothing was happening,” she admitted. “I was literally alienating people. I was making them uncomfortable because I was so like, ‘I need a job! I need a job!’ So much so that my agent at the time said, ‘You’re too intense. You’re making people uncomfortable.’” Watts described feeling desperate and considering giving up her Hollywood dreams multiple times.
It was at this low point that Lynch stepped in.
Naomi Watts Gets Cast In 'Mulholland Drive'
Watts recounted how the filmmaker’s unique casting process stood out to her.
“David Lynch called me in and has a very different way of casting. He sat me down and just looked me in the eyes and asked me questions,” she said. While she initially doubted herself, thinking, “I’m not funny, I’m not sexy, I’m too old,” Lynch’s perspective was transformative. “He just saw me and was able to sort of lift these veneers.”
Shortly after their meetings, Watts was cast in "Mulholland Drive." The role became a defining moment in her career, earning critical acclaim and propelling her to stardom. Watts credited Lynch not only for the professional opportunity but also for becoming “a real mentor and friend."
