Carl Weathers' estate has finally been settled, with a judge approving a six-figure payout to his two sons. The payout comes after months of legal proceedings, now concluding with a final report on the distribution of his estate.
Carl Weathers, best known for his role as Apollo Creed in the Rocky films, passed away on February 2, 2024, in his home in Venice, California.
Carl Weathers' Estate Review Complete Following Court Approval
Before his sons could claim their inheritance, the court-appointed an administrator to thoroughly review his finances, ensuring all assets were accounted for and debts settled.
Following months of work by the administrator, a judge approved the final distribution of the late actor's estate to his sons, Matthew and Jason. According toIn Touch, the final report noted:
"There have been no sales, purchases or exchanges of assets, nor any changes in the form of assets. The estate is solvent."
Matthew and Jason are also co-trustees of the Carl Weathers Living Trust, established by their father.
Carl's Estate Valued At $870K, With No Debts
Before the judge's final approval, The Blast reported in September that the court administrator had already signed off, confirming that the late star had no outstanding debts. The total value of the former football player's estate was recorded at $870,053.83.
This includes two accounts at City National Bank holding $147,000 and safety deposit boxes with $664,000 in cash. In addition to his cash assets, Weathers' estate consists of a well-maintained 2018 GMC Pickup Truck valued at $58,000.
The administrator also confirmed that there were no outstanding creditor claims and all tax returns had been filed. However, he asked that a small portion of the estate—$40,000—be allocated to cover administrative and legal fees.
The Director's Revised Will Revealed Estate Plans
Weathers' will, initially drafted in 1988 but amended in 2014, contained clear instructions for his estate, naming his sons and former spouses as beneficiaries.
In the documents, the late NFL star left his personal belongings to his children, including jewelry, clothing, vehicles, and other cherished possessions.
The news emerged when Weathers' attorney, Barry B. Felsen, filed a petition to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act.
Felsen, who was named executor and successor co-trustee in Weathers' will, sought court approval to manage the estate without further supervision. Additionally, the late father-of-two entrusted Felsen with overseeing burial expenses and settling any debts incurred before his death.
What Was Carl's Official Cause Of Death?
The Blast obtained the star actor's death certificate, which revealed that Weathers passed away in his Venice, California home.
The document listed "atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease" as the cause of death, noting that the actor had been battling heart disease for several years.
The manner of death was ruled "natural." It also disclosed that Weathers spent over five decades in the "entertainment industry" and was divorced at the time of his passing.
In addition to his son Matthew being listed as the one who let the authorities know of his passing, it stated that Weathers was cremated, and his family would keep his ashes.
Carl Weathers Passed Away At 76
Weathers' family confirmed the heartbreaking news with a statement that paid homage to his life. The family's emotional message read:
"[He] was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend."
Fans quickly took to social media to express their grief, with one writing, "RIP CARL WEATHERS. Lots of great roles, but his exit in PREDATOR is especially memorable."
Weathers, beloved by fans and peers alike, starred in over 75 films and TV shows, with his most iconic role being Apollo Creed in "Rocky." He later reprised the role in "Rocky II" and "Rocky III."
Beyond film, Weathers made a significant impact on television. He earned critical acclaim for his role in "The Mandalorian," which led to a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
Although Carl Weathers' estate is officially settled, his legacy will undoubtedly live on.
