So Scarlett Johansson should be one very happy star right now, considering the new MCU movie, “Black Widow” is getting rave reviews everywhere. Along with appreciating the movie, the critics are appreciating her, the storyline, and Florence Pugh as well, many even calling “Black Widow” the best solo MCU movie yet.
So far there has been Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America. Although we are sure Captain Marvel (as in Brie Larson) will welcome Black Widow in the sisterhood of female leads.
So why is Johansson a bit miffed? Let’s find out…
The Infamous “Underwear” Question
Johansson has never taken any foolish questions from the press lightly, and we mean that in the truest sense. In an interview with her and Jeremy Renner, Extra interviewer askes her if she was able to wear undergarments under the skin-tight Black Widow outfit.
Johansson was miffed, “Since when did people start asking each other about in interviews about their underwear?”
When the reporter persisted, Johansson answered, “I’ll leave it up to your imagination. Whatever you feel like I should be wearing or not wearing under that costume.”
Johansson Has Had It With The Press
In the coolest take ever, Cosmopolitan UK‘s Claire Hodgson decided to flip it all and in an interview, she did with Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson, he got all the banal questions about diet, body, red carpet, and underwear; while she got the “real” questions about her character.
Johansson’s pet peeve has been how Black Widow the character is always hyper-sexualized. While it works out in the character’s advantage in the movies, in real life it earns her questions about her diet!
This is something she addressed, very seriously, in a column written for Huff Post as well.
Even Iron Man ‘Wanted Some’
Scarlett Johansson is happy with the way things are turning for her character and found the way she [Warning: Spoilers Ahead] made the ultimate sacrifice in “Avengers: Endgame” to be a perfect closure to her character.
But she does not appreciate the ultra-sexy portrayal of Black Widow in the earlier movies, including “Iron Man 2”.
Said Johansson, “Really talked about like she’s a piece of something, like a possession or a thing or whatever — like a piece of a**, really. And Tony [Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr.] even refers to her as something like that at one point. What does he say? ‘I want some.’
Meanwhile, Black Widow is done running from her past…
But All’s Well That Ends Well, Right?
Johansson continues saying, “At one point [Tony] calls her a piece of meat, and maybe, at that time, that actually felt like a compliment”, but she’s glad the character has fleshed out and shaped up to be what it is today.
What do critics think? Buzzfeed‘s Nora Dominick put it best, saying it “might be one of my favorite solo origin movies in the MCU. There’s something about seeing Natasha finally get her story that made me emotional in all the best ways. Also, Florence Pugh was born for the MCU, and her dynamic with Scarlett is a triumph.”
Here’s Johansson, as the ultimate action hero. Meanwhile, the Chris’s of Marvel continue to do what they do!
