Victoria’s Secret seems to be rebranding itself, ditching the angels for “real women” covering a gamut of shapes, sizes, and of course, ethnicity. And this time, they have gone a step ahead and added in the LGBTQ+ segment as well, which truly gives us hope for humankind, or at least the lingerie-loving ones.
After facing immense backlash over the recent years with many top guns leaving the organization over various accusations, Victoria’s Secret did need a makeover. And now, they have got one…
Here’s the DL…
From Eagerly Awaited To Canceled
Once, Victoria’s Secret Catwalk show, replete with its gorgeous winged angels, was seen as the ultimate in lingerie fashion. Models vied to be Victoria’s Secret Angels but in the recent past, allegations of sexual misconduct and misogyny have plagues the top bosses, with many of them stepping down.
In 2018, former chief marketing officer, Ed Razek claimed that no one wanted to see transgender or plus-size models on the show. He was asked to leave and as he did, trans model Valentina Sampaio shot for VS. And today, she is a spokesperson for the brand.
Priyanka Chopra & Megan Rapinoe Are Onboard too
With the brand taking a bashing because it was not considered inclusive enough, they have gone all out to try and include a diverse set of women to be their spokesperson.
One of them is 35-year-old United States Women’s National Soccer Team player Megan Rapinoe who is also an LGBTQIA+ activist and someone who promotes equal pay. Another is Indian actor, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas.
That said, not all VS fans are happy about this, as one wrote, “Another company on the demise thinking Wokeness will revive them. Whatever VS”…
Fans & Trolls Abound
Some are fans of the movement, like model Helena Christensen who commented, “Kudos for trying it make a change in a world full of closed-minded people 😏”.
But then again, there were the trolls, one of who said, “Wings and fantasy bra forever. No wings, no VS for me.”
Meanwhile, Victoria’s Secret has this to say, “These extraordinary partners, with their unique backgrounds, interests, and passions will collaborate with us to create revolutionary product collections, compelling and inspiring content, new internal associate programs and rally support for causes vital to women.
A Diverse Array Of Women, Indeed
Other than Chopra-Jonas and Rapinoe, VS has partnered with powerful names, both in and outside of fashion.
There is south Sudanese-Australian model Adut Akech and with her is Chinese skier and women’s sports advocate Eileen Gu.
Los Angeles-based journalist and photographer Amanda de Cadenet is happy to be part of this movement, as are British model and activist Paloma Elsesser, and transgender Brazillian model Valentina Sampaio.
It remains to be seen how well the audience takes to this initiative, although the spokespeople may not be the ones displaying all the lingerie…
Till then, see how Priyanka Chopra-Jonas managed to pull off summer bangs…
