John Stamos is getting real about fatherhood, his sobriety and how he could have never had children prior to getting sober.
Despite playing a wise uncle to three girls growing up in San Francisco, and later becoming father of twin boys on “Full House,” ‘Uncle Jesse’ admits he was nowhere near cut out for fatherhood in his younger years.
Stamos welcomed his first child, a son, on April 10, 2018. He and his wife, Caitlin McHugh named him William Christopher Stamos, with his nickname being ‘Billy.’ The name is a nod to Stamos’ father.
Upon welcoming his newborn, the “Fuller House” actor took to Instagram to share the exciting news.
He posted a photo of his son lying on his chest and captioned the sweet snap, “From now on, the best part of me will always be my wife and my son. Welcome Billy Stamos (named after my father) #NotJustanUncleAnymore #Overjoyed.”
With Father’s Day right around the corner, Stamos opened up to E! news about his son’s peculiar pranks, and the meaning of fatherhood.
Stamos dished to E! that Billy loves to hide things in his guitar.
“I should do a show, like, ‘What’s in Daddy’s Guitar?'” he said. “Literally, I’ll find like a pair of sunglasses in there. He thinks it’s funny, and it is funny.”
Some other peculiar games his little one likes to play include hiding behind things and scaring the ever-living life out of his father.
You may want to keep a close eye on this one, Stamos!
Because of his son’s fascination with thrills and chills, Stamos realized something about himself that he had never relaized before.
“I didn’t realize this until now, but I’m a jumpy guy. He scares me,” the dad of one said.
Despite the hidden items in his guitar, getting scared and early mornings (Stamos gets up at 5a.m. with his son every day), he wouldn’t change it for the world.
He said, “Being a parent is about sacrifice. You don’t get rewarded for it. You don’t get a trophy or a ring, but what you do get is, you get a child who is more loving, more kind and a smarter version of you, and I think that’s really special.”
Stamos credits his sobriety for helping him become the father he is today.
The “Big Shot” actor checked into rehab in 2015 for substance abuse. The decision to check into rehab came a month after Stamos was arrested for an alleged DUI in Beverly Hills.
After the alleged DUI and arrest, Stamos took to Twitter to give fans an update on his condition writing, “Thanks to everyone for their love & support. I’m home & well. Very appreciative of the BHPD & Cedars for their care.”
Stamos has been sober almost six years and has a firm understanding of who he is today.
“I know who I am certainly by 57 now,” he added. “It’s been close to six years in June that I sobered up. I never could have been a father during some of the more—some of it was really fun and some of it got to be very unhealthy.”
So, does he want more kids in the future? He and his wife were certainly trying; however, quarantine made them hit pause!
