Tomorrow is the final episode of season 4 of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The show has delivered on several promises it made to its fans, such as getting June (Elisabeth Moss) out of Gilead and continuing her romance with both Nick (Max Minghella) and her husband, Luke (O-T Fagbenle).
However, now that the charges have been dropped against Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), it remains to be seen what June will do and what kind of position she will find herself in as fans look ahead to season 5.
Will Nick Return?
Unfortunately for fans of June and Nick’s relationship, it seems unlikely that Nick will return for the finale.
In last week’s episode, he did, however, share a tender moment with June and their daughter, Nichole, as he gave June a file containing all the information he had on June’s other daughter, Hannah, who is still trapped in Gilead.
Moss went on record saying, “I think it’s pretty simple as far as, she’s in love with Nick. When she turns around at that house, he says her name and she turns around and you see that smile on her face. We haven’t seen her smile like that in maybe the entire season.”
Although it looks like June will continue to work on her relationship with Luke, Moss admitted that “the way that she is with Nick is different than the way she is with anyone else. She’s softer. She’s herself. She loves him. I think it’s pretty simple.”
What About Janine?
Fans of Janine (Madeline Brewer) were relieved to see that she was able to survive the Chicago bombing, although she ended up as a handmaid once again.
Although Janine seems to have once again submitted to her post, writer and producer Eric Tuchman hints that her time trying to escape with June has changed her.
“Janine has endured so much, but because of that, she’s a stronger person,” he revealed. “She’s wiser, she’s more sensible, she’s a survivor, and she still has that tremendous optimism. Nobody needs to take care of Janine anymore in the way June had to. Janine can take care of herself now.”
What Happens In The Finale?
Tuchman hinted that the finale will be “primarily about June struggling with how to respond to Fred’s freedom.”
He teased, “The conclusion is both shocking and inevitable, like all good endings, and it sets up a lot of intriguing possibilities for the future of the show.”
In a 30-second promo for the episode, June can tearfully be heard saying, “I need to give Fred what he deserves” while the shot of an ambulance driving by might spell trouble for either June or the Waterfords.
Looking Ahead
Although “The Handmaid’s Tale” has a strong supporting cast of characters, Tuchman revealed that June’s story is ultimately the “roadmap” for the show. As fans look ahead to season 5, he teased a few questions fans might be asking themselves after tomorrow’s emotional finale.
“What’s next for June? What would really happen for June in this journey?” he asked. “It does take her sometimes to dark places, and it takes her to hopeful places sometimes. She’s always at a crossroads. She’s always trying to decide which path to take. Whatever she decides, we can understand her choice. We may not agree with it, but at least we know where she’s coming from.”
