With the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's daughter, Lilibet Diana, come new questions about royal titles. Both Harry and Meghan still use their titles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Even though they've hinted at dropping the name. While at one point they even wanted to license the title as a brand to make money off of it.

At this point, that situation is all a bit of a mess because of the split between the Sussexes and The Royal Family. However, there are laws the dictate when their children could get titles!

Having To Wait Until Charles Becomes King

Legally the great-grandchildren of the monarch are not entitled to be called Prince or Princess. While also not styled as His or Her Royal Highness. The famous HRH titles that have caused quite a lot of fuss over the years. Particularly when Princess Diana had her HRH title officially removed when she divorced Prince Charles.

Of course, there was also a lot of debate over what Prince Charles' current wife should be called. Once Prince Charles becomes king there is a law that would allow Archie and Lily to become Prince and Princess!

Wait ... We Call William's Kids Princes

Why didn't Prince George, or Princess Charlotte and their brother Prince Louis have to wait for their titles? Well, that's also in the law. It has nothing to do with The Royal Family being racist or the whole Megxit issue.

The law issued in 1915 states that "the grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of dukes of these our realms."

Technically Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are getting upgraded too soon?

Even though as soon as Charles takes the throne Archie and Lily would be legally entitled to call themselves Prince and Princess their parents could choose to forgo their titles. This is actually not something that is all that odd for royal family members to do. Princess Anne's children don't go by their royal titles. Neither do Prince Edward's children.

In those cases it allows them to be exempt from royal duties and have a bit of a clearer path to a normal life. It could be a good idea since the path to the top job is not likely.

An American In Line For The British Throne

With the birth of Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, there's officially an American citizen currently in line to the British throne. As was just mentioned though, her path to the top job is highly unlikely. Currently Lily sits 9th in line to the throne.

She is behind her grandfather Prince Charles, and her uncle Prince William and his 3 kids. As well as her own father and brother. Her parents though could also decide to eliminate her from the line of succession if they decide to forgo their royal titles!
