Although the show was prematurely canceled after two seasons, fans were granted a special two-hour finale that wrapped up many of the shows lingering plot threads.
Now, however, dedicated fans of the series can rejoice, as a new “Sense8” book will be available for purchase later this month!
What’s It About?
The book is broken down into a series of chapters that explores every aspect of the Sense8 phenomenon, from its “role within the Netflix cosmos” to the meaning behind the music used on the show, to how the show explored “queer, trans, and polyamorous identities.”
Why Write the Book?
Sense8 tackled many complicated themes, from breaking language barriers to fostering social connections and empathy.
As Shaw explains, the show “takes a utopian ‘what if we were all connected premise’ and makes it work through fabulous storytelling. I love the way it integrates all the characters and connects gay, trans, and supposedly straight characters from all over the world and then creates a cluster that transcends individual selves and identities. It’s wish-fulfilment television where you suspend disbelief to connect with the fictional cluster and their struggles and pleasures. It’s magical and real, sci-fi and social reality.”
Although the streaming giant usually doesn’t give in to fan petitions, the researchers behind this book felt that the importance of this series pushed Netflix to ultimately grant fans some much-needed closure.
“Many people came out as lesbian, gay or trans after watching the show,” Shaw continued. “The series gave so many people a safe and loving space, a space of hope where they could see themselves as heroes of their own stories. They were relentless in their campaigning and one special finale wouldn’t have the massive costs of an entire series but would give the fans the gift of an ending.”
If You Liked Sense8…
For people who are still looking to get their “Sense8” fix, they encourage fans to check out “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Sex Education.”
There is also a 2020 Netflix documentary called “Disclosure” that focuses on the history of transgender representation in film and TV, and stars “Sense8” actress Jamie Clayton and series creator Lilly Wachowski.
