For those who don’t know, today is “World Oceans Day!” The day happens annually on or around June 8th every single year. The international awareness day was recognized in 2008 by the United Nations.
Celebrities have been using their influence to raise awareness for this day every year. They have actually done a pretty good job! What started as a largely unbeknownst day has become a highly regarded day among political activists and conservation groups. (Not just marine life groups are in on it either)
Leonardo The Legend
It may come as a surprise to learn that famous actors like Leonardo DiCaprio are among the world’s most prolific environmental activists. In fact, Leonardo is possibly the world’s biggest environmental campaigner, donating millions to help support related groups.
He was even seen attending the “Our Ocean Conference”, and even took a picture in front of a giant ornate fish. He captioned the post expressing his heartfelt desire to help preserve marine life and improvement oceanic preservation movements.
“Honored to be part of the #OurOcean Conference. We must take action now to protect our oceans before it’s too late.”
DiCaprio isn’t the only celebrity to take notice of the ocean-themed day of awareness, though! In 2015, a large group of celebrities each took turns taking nude photos with fish as a publicity stunt!
The response was simply astounding. Celebrities like Dame Judi Dench to Sir Richard Branson to Helena Bonham Carter were all seen alongside various sea life completely naked!
The photos were so popular that they raised a large amount of money upon being sold to the public! Charity movements like these set the precedent for future charitable endeavors!
