Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the erstwhile Duchess and Duke of Sussex have just been blessed with a baby girl, and the name reflects not one, but two very important women in Harry’s life.
Neither of which, by the way, is Meghan.
The newborn girl is the second child for the couple, which means their two-year-old son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, is now a big brother.
So what is the story behind the sweet, sweet name? Scroll to find out…
The Queen Did Send Her Wishes
Queen Elizabeth is a “class act” according to her fans, because her official Instagram page, with the handle The Royal Family, just acknowledged her 11th great-grandchild with a lovely message that read, “Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex”.
After giving the name of the little girl, continued saying, “The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted with the news.”
A month back, she also wished Archie a happy second birthday, with this sweet post…
Kate & William Wished Them Too
And it wasn’t just the Queen. Even the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge, as in Prince William and Kate Middleton took to social media to express their happiness.
Their message was equally warm, as it read, “We are all delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili. Congratulations to Harry, Meghan, and Archie.”
Clearly, all the royals do feel that the birth of a new addition to the family is a cause to reach out and celebrate, even if there is a bit of estrangement around.
Here’s the Queen with seven of her great-grandchildren.
The Baby Girl Is Lili, For Short
The baby girl, meanwhile, has been named Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet is a tribute to Queen Elizabeth, whose family nickname is Lilibet.
In fact, it is said that the Queen’s father, King George VI, said of his two daughters, “Lilibet is my pride. Margaret is my joy.”
Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband also called her by the same name, and to honor the memory, at his service, the Queen left a handwritten note on top, signed, “from Lilibet”.
Prince Harry and Meghan are definitely trying to mend the rift that their bowing out may have caused, and the official acknowledgment is another good step by the Royal Family.
Frankly, Its Tradition
The Diana, of course, comes from Harry’s mother, Lady Diana, the Princess of Wales although Prince William and Kate Middleton also honored both Queen Elizabeth II and Diana before.
Their six-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte bears the full name of Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
Clearly, the Sussex Royals have followed tradition as well, and hopefully, this little olive branch will go a long way in rifting any gaps in the relationships of the royals.
