Although best known for his role as the Ninth Doctor on “Doctor Who,” he is also a two-time BAFTA Award nominee and has appeared in many English television shows and films.
Although he only appeared on the show for one season, Eccleston will be reprising his role as the Ninth Doctor for some brand new adventures!
Although Eccleston first appeared as the ninth reincarnation of the Doctor, he was actually the first actor to take over the role after the series reboot back in 2005.
Even though it’s been over 15 years, Eccleston revealed that he had no trouble becoming the enigmatic Time Lord once again.
“Within minutes, it all came flooding back,” he shared. “How to do it, how I like to play him, how I like to work, the joy of it. It was all there.”
A New Adventure
Considering how the Doctor doesn’t age, Eccleston will be providing only his voice to the role as the Doctor tackles 4 new audio adventures.
Although the Doctor usually travels with his or her companions, “The Leftovers” actor teased that the Ninth Doctor will be flying through the TARDIS solo.
“He’s traveling alone,” Eccleston explained. “And I enjoy that element. Because sometimes the relationship dynamics can detract from the narrative. Here he’s a lone wolf, always trying to locate decency and see if it resides in human or alien form. And he’s having great fun.”
A Different Doctor
Although the Doctor’s personality can vary by reincarnation, Eccleston describes him as “charismatic, enigmatic, mercurial, witty, heroic, obstinate, fierce as ever.”
Although the actor couldn’t pass up the chance to get back in the shoes of such a fun character, he admitted that the strong storytelling of the series is one of his favorite aspects of the show.
“It’s all about the writing,” he explained. “I’m amazed none of these ideas have been or will be screened. We’ve met Lady Macbeth, we’ve met the Brigadier and we met a Cyberman earlier. My Doctor is very enthusiastic, very excitable – all the things I remember.”
For The Fans
Another reason Eccleston reprised his role was for the devoted “Doctor Who” fanbase, stating, “I like to make the fans happy.”
“I never left him,” Eccleston continued. “From day one I was approached in the street by fans. And that’s continued. Not a day of my life has gone by without me having to interact with people who are fans of Doctor Who. I’ve always embraced them, literally and figuratively, and they me.”
