Pride month is officially underway and what better way to start off the month than to celebrate the celebrities who found the strength to come out and share their truth by identifying as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Living your most authentic life is a moment that should be celebrated but coming out can be intense and bring on anxieties, nerves, and a lot of pressure. Thankfully, the celebs on this list found their strength and spoke their truth. They will officially be celebrating their first Pride month out and proud!
The singer admits they have had a long journey to get to this point but has always embraced their sexuality. However, in 2021, Lovato decided to get real, “When I started getting older, I started realizing how queer I really am,” she shared in the May 2021 issue of Glamour magazine. Lovato elaborated on the revelation. “I was engaged to a man, and when it didn’t work, I was like, ‘This is a huge sign.’ I thought I was going to spend my life with someone. Now that I wasn’t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth.” Lovato identifies as pansexual and now uses the pronouns they/them.
In January 2021, the beloved performer, 17 shared a photo of herself wearing a t-shirt that read, “Best. Gay. Cousin. Ever.” Then only a week later the brave teenager appeared on the Jimmy Fallon Show where she confirmed her coming out and even talked about her girlfriend, yeah, she is in a full-blown relationship! “I do have the most amazing, wonderful, perfect, most beautiful girlfriend in the whole world.” The dancer also proudly proclaimed, “It’s not something I’m ashamed of. I just haven’t shown the Internet yet.”
Singer Kehlani had a fun time coming out to family, friends, and fans. The 25-year-old has identified with the LGBTQIA+ community in the past identifying as both bisexual and queer. “I finally know I’m a lesbian. I am gay gay gay gay gay.” they shared in a TikTok video in April. They also confirmed the coming out in the April/May issue of The Advocate, “You wanna know what’s new about me? I finally know I’m a lesbian!” acknowledging the privilege that comes along with being in the spotlight as a “cisgender-presenting, straight-presenting person.” They even joked about all their friends and family knowing before them.
Rising star of Falcon and the Winter Soldier Erin Kellyman shared with fans that she is indeed a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. It wasn’t a secret, but the revelation as made in April by Marvel fans that she has a girlfriend. A picture was posted by a Marvel fan account that showed the actress in an embrace with girlfriend Jordan O’Coy. She jokingly responded to the picture on her Instagram account, “IDK why it took you gays so long,” she cheekily responded.
The Bachelor star Colton Underwood shocked the world when he came out as gay in April. “I’ve ran from myself for a long time. I’ve hated myself for a long time. I’m gay. And I came to terms with that earlier this year,” he shared in an emotional interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America. The former football player is adamant that he is ready to live his truth. “I’m still the same Colton to my friends and my family, I just happen to be able to share with people now all of me. And I am proud of that, you know? I am proud to be gay.”

Many other brave people came out to the public this year and we are only halfway through 2021. Courtney Stodden bravely came out amid a battle with Chrissy Teigen who she accused of bullying her as a teenager. Internet Personality Trisha Paytas came out as non-binary using, they/them pronouns. She shouted out Gen Z for giving them the confidence to embrace themselves. 9-1-1: Lone Star actor Ronen Rubenstein publicly opened up to Variety about being bisexual.
