It’s been 24 hours since the “Friends: The Reunion” special aired on HBO Max, and while it had more celebrity cameos than one brain can comprehend, fans were left wondering why two very important people were left out.
The original cast members of “Friends,” Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc & Matthew Perry gathered at the OG soundstage on the Warner Bros Studio lot where it all began.
This reunion special marked the first time in 17 years that the entire cast was together in the same room.
“Friends: The Reunion” also known as “The One Where They Get Back Together,” saw more than just the original six cast members reunite. It saw Ross & Monica’s parents, Gunther, Joey’s hand double, Tom Selleck who played Monica’s love interest Richard and many more unexpected appearances.
Some celebrities who were not on the show but did get an invite to the special included Cara Delevingne, Justin Bieber and BTS.
Rudd played Phoebe’s (Kudrow) fun-loving boyfriend turned husband Mike Hannigan. He joined the show in season 9 and appeared in 17 episodes.
Sprouse, who at the time of his “Friends” debut was about five or six years old, portrayed Ross’ (Schwimmer) son Ben Gellar. He appeared on the show from seasons six through eight.
It’s clear these two put in their time on the show, so again, why were they absent?
According to E!, they were seemingly missing from the reunion special because there were just too many stars to fit in to such a short amount of time.
However, this may not be the whole truth.
Ben Winston, the director of the reunion show, explained the absences were caused by a mixture of Covid-19 restrictions and time constraints.
He spoke to The Wrap and said, “Well, we couldn’t have everybody on, because it’s only an hour and 45 minutes. And you’ve got to pay attention — the main nub of the show has got to be about the six cast members.”
Okay, so what was that scene stealing fashion show with Bieber, Delevigne and Cindy Crawford about???
He continued on, “So you can’t have too many cameos because of course, there were hundreds of amazing people who were in ‘Friends’ over the years. Sadly, we couldn’t get everybody in.”
James Michael Tyler, who played the role of Central Perk barista Gunther, was able to join via Zoom.
Winston chalked a lot of the absences up to the pandemic and the restrictions that has put on all productions.
I wonder if Zoom was considered for Rudd and Sprouse?
I guess Sprouse DID get a bit of a cameo on the Friends Instagram page. Back in September the IG account posted a photo of him sitting on the big orange couch looking at with ‘Huggsy’ the stuffed bedtime penguin pal of Joey (LeBlanc).
The caption read, “The One Where Ben Grew Up.”
I guess we just have to let bygones be bygones.
