Getting into costume for a movie can be sometimes a difficult task for actors. Some have to spend hours in the makeup chair to be able to get ready to film. Others have to wear uncomfortable outfits. Being a superhero can sound like the coolest thing in the world. Until you figure out the spandex costume is not all that comfortable and you’re going to be in it 12 hours a day!
Emma Thomspon went through something like this. Except her issue was not with the fancy gowns that her character, Baroness von Hellman, wears in the film. Her issue was with having to wear underwear!
Thompson had no issue with the lavish coats. In a recent interview though, she confessed something quite personal. Mentioning that her problem was with the fancy underwear. She said that the undergarment that she was forced to wear for her part in the film felt like “a torture item”.

If you ever find Thomspon on the street there’s a good chance that she’s going full commando!
For Thompson, the underwear was not the only difficult part of getting into costume. She also detailed that getting into costume sometimes feels like squeezing into a tube of toothpaste. She gave out some Hollywood secrets. Particularly, one that states you don’t always have to be in the best shape of your life for a part. You just need to tuck your tummy in enough!
Thomspon mentioned, “”If you squeeze it hard enough things will come up and go down and make the shapes,”
In the same interview, Emma Stone gushed about how great it was getting to wear all of these costumes. She mentioned,
“Those [looks] are just so much fun, where Cruella is upstaging the Baroness. There’s multiple [outfits],”
Although she enjoyed the outfits Stone did not comment on whether or not she is also part of the commando army. From what she did mention we can imply that it wasn’t complicated for her to wear underwear. Maybe because she brought her own. Thompson was complaining about how “industrial” the underwear was. That’s probably because she didn’t bring any and the production had to get some for her!
Underwear or no underwear for Thompson it seems that she was able to put in a great performance. Most of the reviews that are coming in for the Disney movie have been quite positive. With, one critic even referring to the movie as “The devil wears Prada on steroids”.
The movie hopes to get people back to theaters, as well as get them to sign up for Disney+. The film is going to be available for Disney+ users with premier access on May 28!
