Mariska Hargitay is seriously impressed with an 11-year-old girl whose savvy knowledge of crime shows allowed her to fight off an attempted kidnapping and later identify her attacker. The star of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” took to Instagram Thursday morning with a major shoutout to a little girl named Alyssa, who was featured on NBC’s “Today” after a surveillance video of her frightening incident went viral.
“Alyssa, first and most important, I am so relieved and grateful to know that you are safe. And I am so honored to be part of your incredible story,” Hargitay began her message to the young fan.
The video, released by officials, shows the terrifying moment a knife-wielding man jumps out of his car, chases, and grabs Alyssa while she was waiting at a school bus stop. The courageous girl fights off the scumbag and gets away, but not before she marked him up with a slime mixture she had on her hands, as she had been experimenting with slime at school.
“I knew that that might be better evidence if the cops do find him,” Alyssa told “Today.”
“You are one BRAVE, Strong and Smart young woman. I think the SVU squad might have to add slime to their crimefighting gear!” Mariskay Hargitay wrote to the young fan.
She added, “Take good care of yourself and each other. With all my love, your number one fan, Mariska.”
The quick-thinking by Alyssa did in fact end up panning out, as officials were able to nap the suspect due to the markings.
“The victim at the time of the attempted abduction was playing with blue slime,” Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said in a press conference this week.
He added, “The suspect, when we caught him, had blue slime all over his own arms.”
The man has been charged with the attempted kidnapping of a child under 13 and aggravated assault and battery and is currently being held on a $1.5 million bond.
