The MTV Movie & TV Awards 2021 took place last night and without a doubt, Sacha Baron Cohen stole the show with his acceptance video of the comedic genius award for 2021. The British actor brought out all of his famous characters for the skit. In which he made fun of cancel culture and had Borat up to his usual cringe-worthy bits.
The video features appearances by characters like Bruno, Borat, Ali G, and General Aladeen as well as Sacha Baron Cohen as himself.
The award that Cohen accepted has been given out to different types of comedians over the years. Therefore, it’s kind of hard to pinpoint the criteria to be able to be selected for the award. By most accounts though, it’s given out as more of a “lifetime achievement award” than anything else.
Past winners of the award include Will Farrell, Melissa McCarthy, and Kevin Hart. Good luck trying to figure out what these three people have in common with Sacha Baron Cohen.
Borat is the first of Cohen’s characters to take the stage. Thanking “Prince Harry” when it was actually Seth Rogen who had actually introduced the winner. Borat mentions that he will keep the award along with other treasures they have confiscated from jews. A big jab at Hollywood for sure!
From there Ali G appears claiming he should be the one to receive the award as he was the original character. Sacha himself makes an appearance and this is where he makes the bit about canceling himself. There’s no need for more spoilers just watch the video!
The talk of canceling himself is certainly something that Baron Cohen probably said as a joke. In a more serious tone though, he did mention that there’s a good chance that we won’t be seeing another Borat movie. As the last project was perhaps the most dangerous that he has been involved in.
He won two out of three nominations at the Golden Globes this year. That could be a great last ride for the character as Cohen mentioned,
“The gray suit is locked up and not coming out again,” he stated.
Although Sacha Baron Cohen’s acceptance speech was certainly one of the highlights of the show there were of course other big winners on the night. Wanda Vision, for example, was one of the big winners of the night.
The Marvel production took home, best show, and star Elizabeth Olsen took home the best performance in a show award as well. Kathryn Hahn also took home the best villain award for her role on the show. Marvel productions in general had a very good night last night!
