Alec Baldwin recently spoke up against the ‘cancel culture’ that social media users turn to when a celebrity makes an error online.
The actor came out to slam attempts to ridicule famous people whenever they do something that the general public does not accept.
In this age and time, fans respond to how a celebrity dresses, eats or speaks, and if it offends, they could result in cancelation.
Baldwin’s wife, Hilaria, has come face-to-face with this culture a number of times. This time around, her husband is sticking it to fans and urging the to let her be.
Find out more details below.
The ‘Cancel Culture’
Cancel or cancellation culture on social media essentially means that a celebrity’s status in the online society becomes redundant.
If it’s an actor, their movies lose viewers, if it’s a musician, their streams could drop, and if it’s a reality star or media personality, they could lose subscribers.
This culture initially began as a way of teaching famous people lessons whenever they do or say something bad. It has grown to happen anytime a celebrity makes a point that a vast public does not agree with.
Speaking about this culture, Baldwin said, “Cancel culture is really like a forest in a constant need of fuel.”
More On Alec Baldwin’s Thoughts
The “Beetlejuice” star noted that the attempt at canceling celebrities for every mistake they make is a ”functioning objective with no prejudice or code.”
Furthermore, he noted that the culture has gone on for a very long time, but now it’s being done for the wrong reasons, which he doesn’t appreciate.
This vocal message came a day after the actor slammed social media users for their negative responses towards his wife, Hilaria.
Although Baldwin understood why such a culture existed in the first place, he was certain that it has been used negatively in recent times.
The Hilaria Baldwin Scandal
In December 2020, Hilaria found herself in the midst of a back-to-back controversy on social media following a Twitter users tweet about the American yoga instructor’s accent.
The user wrote in a thread, that the 37-year-old had been faking a Spanish accent for many years, when she had no obvious heritage as a Spanish person. This claim was accompanied by several videos that showed Hilaria speaking on and off with a Spanish accent.
After this, a manhunt began into the yoga instructor’s life and family background, which later led to fans calling for her to be canceled.
Hilaria Didn’t Deserve The ‘Cancel Culture’
Many online users took part in the scrutiny and detective work into Hilaria’s background, but others openly disclosed their disinterest in the exercise.
Some of her family members, including her step-daughter, Ireland Basinger Baldwin, chimed in with a few thoughts.
She noted that the year was hard enough for everyone, including her family, and that the attempt at scrutinizing Hilaria for her accent was uncalled for.
While the ‘cancel culture’ tactic has been addressed by the Baldwin family, it doesn’t seem like it will stop anytime soon.
