The news comes after the “Big Mouth” star spent 60 days in a rehab treatment facility, seeking treatment for drug and alcohol abuse.
“His fans know he’s struggled in the past with sobriety, he has talked about it openly,” a source revealed. “Unfortunately, he has struggled again during the pandemic.”
History Of Substance Abuse
In a 2019 interview, Mulaney revealed that he began drinking when he was only 13-years-old.
“I drank for attention,” he revealed. “I was really outgoing, and then at 12, I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again.”
In a story with “Esquire,” he admitted that his excessive drinking caused him to turn to drugs.
Although he shared that he never liked smoking pot, the entertainer confessed that he “loved” cocaine and experimenting with prescription drugs.
Mulaney, 38, entered a rehabilitation facility in December of last year, seeking help for reported alcohol dependence and cocaine addiction.
He left the facility in February 2021 and entered outpatient care, where he is continuing his sobriety work.
According to a spokesperson, “John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work.”
With relaxing COVID-19 restrictions, the former “Saturday Night Live” writer announced that he plans to get back on the stage, performing a 5-day residency at Manhattan’s City Winery from May 10-14 called “John Mulaney: From Scratch.”
Every show has already been sold out, although the venue is still taking strict precautions to protect its customers.
Admission to the show is dependent on providing either proof of a vaccine or a negative COVID-19 test. Phones and smart watches will also be secured during the event.
Tendler, an artist and NYU Costume Studies master’s candidate, revealed that she is “heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”
Mulaney, who often praised his wife during his stand-up routines, once captioned a happy photo, “Anna, you might as well be the Sea Org, because I’d sign a Billion Year Contract to be with you…Life would be so stupid without you.”
