Now that Hilary Duff is set to star in a reboot of How I Met Your Mother, she’s opening up about another reboot that she was also set to start in, but will probably never see the light of day!

In a recent appearance on The Jess Cagle Show Duff talked about why the new Lizzie McGuire show was ultimately axed. One of the main reasons for the cancelation may have been creative differences between the people at Disney and herself. Although she does not own the rights to the character her views were somewhat taken into account in the creative process.

Was Duff’s View To PG-13 For Disney?

Duff had already mentioned previously that there were some creative differences in the process. Between the idea that she and then director of the project, Terri Minsky, had versus what Disney was looking to produce. Misky stopped working for Disney in 2020, and that was in many respects the final nail on the project’s coffin. Duff mentioned though,

“For me, it only makes sense to me to shoot a show where she’s acting like a 30-year-old in a modern world.”

Hinting that Disney’s view was still more along the lines of producing a kid’s show. Maybe just how they tried it with Girl Meets World a few years back.

The Lizzie McGuire Lost Episodes

Although the project is for all intents and purposes dead at this point there’s still a bit of a tease for Lizzie McGuire fans. According to reports most of the original cast had returned to the reboot and 2 episodes of this reboot were actually shot.

Those episodes are shelved somewhere in Burbank California probably. Although Duff wanted to try and get fans on her side to bring the reboot to Hulu nothing came from it. The move to Hulu could have afforded the team the opportunity to create a more mature show.

Will Duff Ever Return As Lizzie McGuire?

In the conversation, Duff hinted at the fact that she felt this was the perfect time to explore a reboot for her. Admitting that there was a point in her life where she “could not stand Lizzie McGuire”, and did not even want to hear her name.

However, her feelings towards the character have since changed for sure. She mentioned of the character,

“She’s, you know, this is where it all began for me. And she is me and I am her. And I brought what I could to that, which was very much just who I am inside,”

What About Other Reboots?

Although Duff did not reveal any specific details from the project she did mention that actually her push to revive Lizzie McGuire very well could be the reason she got the part in this reboot in the first place.

Producers of the new show really liked how protective Duff was of her former character. A trait that could allow her to pay the same respect to some of the characters from the main How I Met Your Mother show. We’ll see Duff channeling her inner Ted Mosby, and see how it goes!
