Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney has just revealed never-before-shared details of her disordered eating. The 25-year-old vault queen appeared very candidly in a series of selfie videos posted to her Glohé wellness Instagram last night, with the London 2012 Olympics face getting honest about her battles with binge eating as well as the other side of the coin, one seeing the star starve herself. Sharing an uplifting end as she even recommended treatment she swears by, McKayla divulged what’s lesser-known. Check it out below.
Scroll for snippets from the stories. They came as the Five Guys burger lover, this year making headlines for her cheeky fast-food trip, revealed she’d actually just eaten a burger. McKayla then dedicated her late-night video to a confession, seemingly in the hope of reaching out to other suffering with food or body-image issues.
“I’m in a little bit of a food coma,” Maroney admitted, laughing a little, saying that she got a Bison Burger, but that this wasn’t the point of the video.
“So, I used to struggle with binge eating,” she added, then revealing that to “overcome binge eating after…this is really bad…but, when my dad passed away, to go to his funeral, I starved myself for ten days so I could show up to his funeral.”
Revealing the binge-starve cycle that she wound up in, the gymnast then shared that she’d taken a binge-eating course from “this woman” who used to charge $2,000, but the course is now only 100 bucks. “Her name’s Brittany,” McKayla said. Scroll for the video.
McKayla, who does get paid for her GEICO promos, confirmed she was 100% not getting paid to mention this. “Today, I guess….I just found this out,” she said, saying that Brittany is retiring from coaching. The gymnast then encouraged fans to sign up for the final available courses, Brittany Brown is the coach.
Maroney, who kept talking and bravely addressed looking in the mirror and her tips for negative days – these include staying off social media – wrapped up with some self-care via a sheet mask. More below.
In 2019, McKayla opened up to Byrdie, offering some, but not full details on her past eating. Speaking to the media outlet, the star revealed:
“When I wasn’t working out eight hours a day, I gained weight, and my coaches weren’t happy about that. So I really didn’t like my body for a while after I couldn’t really work out. I wasn’t eating that healthy when I was competing.”
