The Weeknd just revealed he is taking action when it comes to giving back to those in need and announced a huge donation to the people of Ethiopia in order to provide millions of meals for those in need.
The “Blinding Lights” star took to social media on Easter Sunday with a heartfelt message about the ability to effect change and give back to a country that is so near and dear to his heart, as both The Weeknd’s parents are Ethiopian immigrants.
“My heart breaks for my people of Ethiopia as innocent civilians ranging from small children to the elderly are being senselessly murdered and entire villages are being displaced out of fear and destruction,” The Weeknd captioned a screenshot of his message to Instagram.
“I will be donating $1 million to provide 2 million meals through the United Nations World Food Programme and encourage those who can to please give as well.”
The Weeknd’s announcement included a photo (above) of a young Ethiopian child being cradled against their mother’s chest.
Ethiopia has been rife with turmoil ever since its Prime Minister launched an offensive attack into the ruling organization inside its own Tigray Region last November, causing instability throughout the entire area. The World Food Program aims at providing resources for those most affected by the conflict.
“The outbreak of conflict in Tigray last November coincided with the peak harvest period, leading to lost employment and incomes, disrupted markets, a rise in food prices, and limited access to cash and fuel,” a statement on the organization’s website reads.
