George Floyd's family has just reached an 8-figure settlement with the city of Minneapolis, just weeks before a trial is scheduled to begin for the police officer charged with his murder.

According to multiple reports, the Minneapolis City County unanimously approved the settlement today, a session that was closed off the public. An amount of $27 Million is to be paid to Floyd's beneficiaries, including a $500,000 contribution from the Floyd family to the community at the intersection of 38th and Chicago Avenue -- now, known as George Floyd Square.

Floyd's family filed a federal lawsuit against the city and the four officers involved in his death, which pointed out the issues with police policies and training -- including neck restraints.

George Floyd was killed after officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for about nine minutes cutting off the oxygen to his brain. During the brutal incident, George repeatedly said, "I can't breathe" and called out for his mother.

"The city needs to exhibit responsible leadership in the face of the horrific tragedy that really was a watershed moment for America," Floyd family attorney, Ben Crump said on Friday.

Former police officer, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter, as well as third-degree murder. Jury selection is underway in his criminal case, and as of today, six of the twelve jurors have been seated.

As for the other three officers involved, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane, and J. Alexander Kueng -- they have been charged with aiding and abetting both second-degree murder and manslaughter. All three are expected to go to trial this summer. All four officers were fired the day after Floyd's death.

Floyd's family is expected to hold a press conference this afternoon.
