In a recent documentary entitled “Framing Britney Spears,” the media’s negative impact is brought into sharp focus.
The documentary fueled public conversations about how the press treats young talents. Parts of these conversations led to people digging up old interviews with celebrities and examining them again.
Among talk show hosts who have faced backlash include David Letterman and Diane Sawyer, and Oprah Winfrey. Winfrey is facing public ire for her part in a 2004 interview where she asked the famed twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen some sensitive and personal questions.
Professionally Intrusive
At the time of the interview, Winfrey questioned the 17-year-old twins about their personal lives.
She also asked them a sensitive question about Mary-Kate’s eating disorder, a subject that significantly upsets the twins. Defending her sister’s privacy, Ashley countered that people are always going to write what they want, and it was up to them to accept it all in a stride as part of the process.
The dismissive response did not dissuade the show’s host as she continued asking the twins sensitive questions. At the end of the show, Winfrey said the twins were the worst guests she had ever had.
Weights And Heights
During the question and answer session, the show host interrupted Ashley to ask about her body size.
Taken aback by the question, Ashley’s eyes appeared to bulge, while Mary-Kate answered that they are both petite and under 5″2. Interrupting again, Winfrey shared that she was obsessed with sizes and she was trying to guess their sizes.
Ashley then explained that she and her sister often needed their clothes adjusted because of their weight and height. As the interview continues to spark public outrage, “Best Life” reached out to Winfrey’s representative for comments but is yet to hear back from them.
The Courage To Ask
According to CBS, Mary-Kate sought help for an eating disorder a few months after the Winfrey interview. The child-star was admitted into a rehabilitation clinic on June 13, 2004, and was discharged July 26, as per CNN.
After her release from the center, Mary-Kate opened the next chapter of her life as a freshman at New York University.
During an interview with Elle, Mary-Kate was asked about her eating disorder, and the star opened up about her experience. She emphasized the importance of requesting help when needed.
The Next Chapter
She explained that reaching out for help is the hardest part of the journey, bit it’s worth it. According to The Cut, the star shared that she does not want to go through life with her eyes shut as she wants to be conscious of things.
She continued that people’s life experiences are part of the growth process and “part of life.”
Now 34-year-old, the “Full House” star has sparked relationship rumors with businessman John Cooper barely a month after her divorce from Olivier Sarkozy.
