In 2015, Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, orchestrated the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard.

On the night of June 10, Gypsy let Godejohn into their home after Dee Dee had gone to bed. While Gypsy has previously spoken about that fateful night, her new memoir reveals additional details.

In the book, Gypsy shares that she took three Vicodin and locked herself in the bathroom after letting Godejohn in, fully aware that he was about to kill her mother as part of their plan to escape together.

On June 14, 2015, Godejohn carried out the murder, stabbing Dee Dee to death in her sleep while Gypsy hid in the bathroom. "I went to the bathroom, sat on the floor and covered my ears. Except I heard. I heard everything," she wrote in her book. "Nick entered the room soundlessly because there was no bedroom door, so when she finally woke up it must have been because he was standing over her, not because of any noise. She was startled."

Even though she was in the bathroom, Gypsy claimed to remember "hearing her as if her voice was muffled." She believes she heard her mother ask, "Who are you?"

Gypsy added that Godejohn has "claimed he said something like, ‘I am death. You will die now,'" but she doesn't recall hearing that. "I just heard the screaming," she shared. "And then I lay in the fetal position with my hands pressed hard over my ears. But I could still hear things."

She went on to describe hearing what she believes was a "pause" during the stabbing of her mother. "And then it sounded like she may have had a pool of blood in her mouth because I heard her say with a gargle, 'Gypsy. Gypsy.'"

Despite hearing her name, she didn't respond. "I just stayed very, very still. I was trying to focus on my breathing," she wrote. "There weren’t thoughts going through my head at all. It was like I was locked inside a cloud, with the out-of-reach Earth spinning below me."

"Nothing was real. I was a simulation, as I focused on taking my next breath, and the next. And then I heard one sharp, ‘Help me!’" she added.

She wrote that after her mother was killed, Godejohn instructed her to clean him off before he sexually assaulted her. The two then fled the scene of the murder.

According to arrest records, Dee Dee was stabbed 17 times in the back while she slept. The records also revealed that after the assault in Gypsy’s room, the couple stole over $4,400 from the house. They then checked into a motel outside Springfield, Missouri, where the murder took place, to plan their next steps.

While the murder remains controversial, many view Gypsy as both a victim and a perpetrator, whose actions were shaped by years of manipulation and trauma. Her story has since raised awareness about Munchausen syndrome by proxy and the devastating impact of long-term abuse.

Why Did Gypsy Rose Murder Her Mom?

Gypsy Rose’s childhood was dominated by manipulation, abuse, and deception orchestrated by her mother, Dee Dee. Born in 1991, Gypsy appeared to be a normal, healthy child, but her mother quickly began fabricating illnesses, subjecting Gypsy to unnecessary medical treatments, and keeping her isolated from the world. This abuse is now recognized as Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a psychological disorder where a caregiver fakes or induces illness in someone under their care for attention and sympathy.

From a young age, Dee Dee claimed Gypsy suffered from a range of severe conditions, including leukemia, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, asthma, and developmental delays. She confined Gypsy to a wheelchair, shaved her head to mimic the appearance of a cancer patient, and subjected her to surgeries, medications, and feeding tubes—all of which were unnecessary. Dee Dee also controlled every aspect of Gypsy's life, ensuring she couldn't speak up or escape the abusive cycle.

Dee Dee’s deception extended to the public, garnering sympathy and financial support from charities like Habitat for Humanity and Make-A-Wish, as well as free trips, including visits to Disney World. Behind closed doors, Gypsy endured years of psychological, emotional, and physical abuse, which escalated as she grew older. Dee Dee even chained Gypsy to her bed at times and used physical punishment when Gypsy attempted to assert her independence.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard's Testimony

Gypsy testified that she believed murder was her only escape, as previous attempts to flee or seek help had failed. She explained how she and Godejohn planned the murder over text messages, which investigators later recovered as evidence. Despite her involvement, Gypsy’s testimony painted a picture of a young woman desperate to break free from years of abuse and manipulation.

In July 2016, Gypsy Rose Blanchard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for her role in her mother’s death. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison, a relatively lenient sentence compared to her boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn, who was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
