In 2018, Snoop Dogg made his debut as a cookbook author with "From Crook to Cook," but his 2023 follow-up took things to the next level with a game-changing Thanksgiving recipe.
His second cookbook, "Goon with the Spoon," features more than 65 “crowd-pleasing” recipes created alongside rapper Earl “E-40” Stevens. The book includes a variety of dishes, such as “Ridin’ Dirty Shrimp ‘n’ Grits,” “Snoop’s Fruity Loop Bars,” and an incredible recipe for a must-try Thanksgiving side dish: mashed potatoes.
While it's no secret that mashed potatoes require plenty of butter, Snoop Dogg takes it up a notch by adding Hennessy.
Snoop Dogg Adds Cognac To His Mashed Potatoes
We all know mashed potatoes need plenty of butter, but what does Hennessy bring to the mix? According to Snoop Dogg, once the alcohol cooks off, the addition of cognac adds a “depth” of flavor and a “bit of sweetness” that elevates the dish.
“These ain’t your mama’s mashed potatoes, y’all!” Snoop explained, per PEOPLE. “I know what you’re thinking: ‘Isn’t cognac more for a concert with the Dogg rather than Thanksgiving?’ My answer to that: ‘Why not both?’” He says that cooking his mashed potatoes with Hennessy is his “favorite way to eat this Thanksgiving staple.”
Recipe For Snoop Dogg’s Cognac Mashed Potatoes
Snoop Dogg’s Cognac Mashed Potatoes are a rich, flavorful twist on the classic.
Start by peeling and chopping 4 lbs. of russet potatoes and boiling them in a large pot of heavily salted water until tender, about 25 minutes. Drain the potatoes and set them aside.
In the same pot, cook ½ cup of cognac over medium heat until the alcohol has cooked off, about 3 to 5 minutes. Then whisk in 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter until melted, followed by 2 cups of heavy cream and ½ cup of mayonnaise, cooking for another 5 minutes until the mixture thickens and becomes warm.
Return the potatoes to the pot, add 2½ teaspoons of kosher salt and 1 teaspoon of cracked black pepper, and mash until smooth and well combined. The addition of cognac brings a deep flavor and slight sweetness to the potatoes, making them a standout side dish.
Snoop's Good Good Green Beans
Snoop Dogg’s Lemon Butter Green Beans are a vibrant addition to any Thanksgiving spread.
With 2 lbs. of green beans, 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter, the zest of 1 lemon, and a sprinkle of salt and black pepper, these green beans add a pop of color and flavor to the meal. The recipe is quick and easy: start by boiling the beans for about three minutes, then brown the butter in a separate pan or skillet.
Once the beans are drained, toss them in the butter until well-coated, then season with salt, pepper, and fresh lemon zest for a burst of freshness. It's the perfect way to balance out the richness of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with a bit of zest!
Make Snoop Dogg's My My My Sweet Potato Pie
Snoop Dogg’s Sweet Potato Pie brings a twist to the classic with a rich, flavorful filling and a homemade pie crust.
For the crust, mix 1.25 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter, and 1/4 cup of vegetable shortening. Work the ingredients into a coarse meal and then gradually add water until the dough can be pinched together. Let it chill in the fridge for at least two hours.
For the filling, bake 4 large sweet potatoes at 400°F (200°C) until tender. While the potatoes are baking, combine 1/2 cup of whole milk, 5 tablespoons of melted butter, 2 large eggs, 1 cup of light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg, and the zest of one orange in a food processor. Once the sweet potatoes are cooked, remove the skin, add them to the food processor, and blend until smooth.
Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface, making sure it’s large enough to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Press it into the plate, fill it with the sweet potato mixture, and bake for 60-90 minutes. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, cover it with foil.
Snoop’s take on this Southern classic is sure to be a hit, especially with the extra richness of butter used in both the crust and the filling.
