There’s an adage in the LGBTQIA+ community that claims “a person ‘comes out’ more than once,” and singer David Archuleta knows this personally.

After appearing to once confirm a certain “preference” of his in a now-viral TikTok, the musician, 33, has now clarified his stance in a cheeky interview that will surely get people talking.

A Misunderstood TikTok Led David Archuleta To Claim He ‘Couldn’t Relate’ To A Certain Sexual Role

The matter regarding Archuleta first started in February, when a misunderstanding about a statement made in another person’s TikTok caused more than a bit of confusion.

As reported in OUT, the original video featured a woman pulling out a measuring tape and pointing to the 3-inch mark.

“If this is you,” she states, “you better lower your motherf---ing tone when you’re talking to me.”

Archuleta then stitched that video with a clip of him singing his first hit single, “Crush,” which seemed to imply that he took no issue with dating men of a certain size.

As it turns out, the singer assumed the woman was referring to a person’s height, and not their “size.”

“Was this not a short-person trend?” the 5'5" singer asked in a follow-up TikTok while laughing about the situation.

After multiple attempts to clarify himself, including blaming his misinterpretation of the woman’s TikTok on being tired the night before (“I was comfy in bed, ready to go to sleep,” Archuleta would exclaim in embarrassment), another TikTok user posted an assumption in the singer’s comments.

“I was gonna say, being a full-time bottom isn’t so…”

Archuleta would pin that response to his last TikTok video on the matter, seemingly “outing” himself as the opposite of such a thing.

“I’m sure that you are absolutely right,” David said with confidence.

“[And] other people out there, I’m sure that they would definitely agree with that… couldn’t relate.”

Now, after months of online speculation, Archuleta is finally clearing the air.

The “Hell Together” vocalist recently appeared on LOGO’s Spill with host and good friend, actor Johnny Sibilly.

As one might expect, the chat soon turned to the singer’s odd TikTok experience, where Archuleta candidly shared the truth of the matter.

“People [were] assuming I was just [a] bottom,” he told Sibilly. “When they first started saying that, I didn’t even know what that meant. I didn’t know that [kind of terminology] before.”

After explaining that he “couldn’t relate” to being a bottom because it “wasn’t [his] experience,” David defined himself more clearly.

“I would consider myself a ‘vers,’” he noted, using the shortened term for ‘versatile’ (a gay man who enjoys both positions).

“I’m [more] into the person,” Archuleta continued. “Doing only one thing [with them] is boring to me.”

David Archuleta Believes He May Actually Be Demisexual

Elsewhere in the conversation, Archuleta emphasized the importance of him being attracted to the person he’s with, and not just the sum of their parts.

This ultimately led him to make another confession about his sexuality.

“A lot of people [tell me], ‘oh, you’re demisexual.’ And I’m like, I think I am.”

The Cleveland Clinic denotes demisexuality as, “a sexual orientation in which a person feels sexually attracted to someone only after they’ve developed a close emotional bond with them.”

“Forming a bond doesn’t guarantee a person will feel a sexual attraction,” they go on to state, “but the bond is needed before sexual activity is even possible.”

When It Came To Her Son And The Mormon Faith, David Archuleta’s Mom Chose To Go To ‘Hell Together’

Back in March, Archuleta opened up about his experience with the Mormon church and how it led to the creation of “Hell Together,” a touching ballad dedicated to his mother, Lupe.

Sitting down with PAPER, the American Idol alum explained the song came about after Lupe, once a devoted follower of the Mormon faith, followed her son out of the religion after more than 30 years.

“I asked what made her feel she needed to leave because she didn’t need to follow my example,” he shared.

She said, ‘If you go to Hell, we’re all going to Hell with you.’ I was really moved by that.”

He also celebrated the many freedoms awarded to him after coming out and moving away from the faith.

“Growing up religious, I felt like I always had to shield myself from anything that could put me at risk. And so now that I don't worry about that anymore,” David declared. “I'm just like, okay, what's out there? Let's go to this, let's go to that. And it's been so much fun.”

Since leaving the Mormon faith, David now finds peace and meaning in everyday things, including music, dancing, and other people.

“I go to a lot of EDM festivals,” he says, “because you want to find somewhere where you feel community and where you're connecting with something bigger than you. It's actually this really beautiful experience. It's so reminiscent of religion to me because you're going into a commonplace, connecting to one thing, and sharing that moment with everyone. You feel this oneness together.”
