This week, the NFL issued a security alert to teams and the players' union in response to a series of burglaries.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that the homes of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were broken into in early October. The break-ins occurred within hours of the Chiefs' Week 5 game against the New Orleans Saints.

The Belton Police Department in Missouri was notified of the break-in at Mahomes' home shortly after midnight on October 6. Kelce's residence was reportedly targeted just after the game began on October 7, with $20,000 in cash stolen. Police also reported that the back door of Kelce’s home had been damaged.

According to a memo obtained by The Associated Press, the homes of professional athletes from various sports have been "increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups." The NBA has also circulated a similar warning to its players about the growing security threat.

To minimize the chances of being targeted, players were advised to take preventive measures and install security systems in their homes. They were also cautioned against posting updates on social media about their whereabouts or daily routines and were urged not to share images of valuable items online.

The burglary groups are believed to conduct thorough surveillance of their targets, often disguising themselves as grounds maintenance workers or joggers in the area. They are said to focus on homes in secluded locations, primarily targeting master bedrooms and closet spaces.

In the case of Travis Kelce, it’s estimated that he lost around $100,000 in jewelry, including his first-ever Super Bowl jersey. Patrick Mahomes also fell victim, with a number of valuable items taken, including jerseys, medals, trophies, and awards. The thieves also stole personal belongings from Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, including her jewelry and designer bags.

In a statement, the Leawood Police Department said they "will not comment on any open investigations."

"Our agency follows up on all investigative leads and works closely with victims to solve open cases," they said. "The Leawood Police Department is dedicated to the public we serve and will work tirelessly to ensure the City of Leawood remains one of the safest cities in the State of Kansas.”

According to multiple sources speaking with FOX4, law enforcement officials suspect that the culprits are part of a South American crime ring targeting high-profile residences. "This is a sophisticated operation. It’s not some guy that’s going down to the local pawn shop," security expert Mike Barbieri explained.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all that this crime spree that is going across the entire country is designed by some very sophisticated people in somewhat of a cartel," he continued. "If you have a particular individual that’s an athlete, a wealthy CEO, you can find out just about anything you need to find out about these people online."

Reports indicate that burglars broke into Patrick Mahomes' Belton mansion around midnight on October 6, with a similar break-in occurring at Travis Kelce's Kansas home just hours later. These incidents are believed to be part of a broader wave of criminal activity in the area.

The investigations into the robberies are ongoing, with the FBI working alongside local authorities to solve the case. While no arrests have been made yet, authorities confirmed that Kelce lost $20,000 in cash during the break-in.

Mahomes purchased his Belton, Missouri mansion in 2020 and had a luxurious estate built, which includes a partial football field. The property was completed last year, and Mahomes has spoken highly of the home since its completion.
