Donald Glover has some bad news for his Australian and New Zealand fans.
The multi-hyphenate star, best known by his musical ego Childish Gambino, recently announced the cancellation of the Australian and New Zealand leg of his The New World Tour.
The upcoming 2025 concerts were canceled over the musician's health. Donald Glover sparked concern about his well-being last month when he canceled the remainder of his North American, UK, and European performances.
Donald Glover Wishes He Could Avoid Disappointing Fans
The "This Is America" hitmaker broke the sad news in a statement sent to ticket holders. He explained that his recovery from a recent surgery was taking longer than expected; therefore, he could not deliver the performances fans expected.
"The upcoming concerts in Australia and New Zealand are canceled. One of the last things I'd ever want to do is disappoint my fans," Glover explained, adding:
"I really appreciate the support you have shown, and know that I will do what I can to give you an exceptional experience when the time is right. Thank you."
The New World tour was set to start in Auckland on January 28 before making its way around Australia in February. Extra shows were even added to meet demands in Sydney and Melbourne, per ABC.
Childish Gambino Canceled The Remainder Of His Tour In October
Glover first sparked concerns about his well-being in October when he announced the cancellation of multiple concerts due to an undisclosed condition. He shared the news on X in a lengthy statement, writing:
"After my show in New Orleans, I went to the hospital in Houston to make sure of an ailment that had become apparent. After being assessed, it became clear I would not perform that night."
"And after more tests, I could not perform the rest of the US tour in the time asked. As of now, I have surgery scheduled and need time out to heal. My path to recovery is something I need to confront seriously," he continued.
"With that said, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the North American tour and the UK and European dates," Glover explained, noting tickets would be refunded at their purchase venues.
Fans Lament The Canceled Concerts While Wishing For Glover's Recovery
Glover's post sparked numerous heartbroken comments from fans, disappointed they wouldn't get to watch him perform. Despite their pain, they wished the singer a speedy recovery, with one writing:
"Absolutely gutted it was canceled and not rescheduled (U.K Dates), but fully understand and wish you and speedy recovery. All the best, sir. We'll see you back soon."
"Canceled as in won't be happening (as of rn), and no longer considered postponed? I'm so sorry this has happened, and I hate it for you. I've seen you about 9 times, and I can't wait to see you again," another penned.
"Deeply wishing for your recovery, Donald, still listening to Bando Stone, Awaken & Atavista every day, will eagerly wait for news about your recovery. Stay safe," a third commented. A fellow supporter added, "You will always be my favorite artist/rapper. Get well soon, big dog. We're all sending you our energy."
The 'Atlanta' Star Will Close The Chapter On His Musical Alter Ego
Earlier this year, The Blast reported that Glover would close the chapter on his musical alter ego, Childish Gambino. He announced in July that his LP "Bando Stone & The New World" would be the last under his famous stage name.
As for why he chose to abandon the beloved moniker, Glover noted he was "definitely not 25 and standing in front of a boulder anymore." He explained that he did not feel like he had "to build in this way anymore," adding:
"This has to move. You give what you can, but there's beauty everywhere in every moment. You don't have to build it. You don't have to search for it."
Fatherhood Inspired Donald Glover's Decision
While reflecting on what made him change, Glover cited his status as a dad. He claimed being a father had reshaped his perception of success, saying: "I think grace is undervalued in the world."
"When I put my son on my shoulders, I feel deep joy. That's real. No one on their deathbed is going to look back and say, 'Thank God I avoided being cringe,'" he added. His final album as Childish Gambino, featured a lineup of impressive artists.
The list included Chloe Bailey, Jorja Smith, Yeat, Amaarae, Flo Milli, Steve Lacy, Foushee, and more. Glover hoped the album would leave a lasting impression on listeners, claiming, "That kind of real estate is way more valuable to me [than chart metrics]."
Get well soon, Donald Glover!
