Whoopi Goldberg has accused a New York City bakery of refusing to make her a birthday dessert due to her political views.
Goldberg turned 69 on Wednesday, November 13, and celebrated the day with her co-hosts on "The View," where she made the claims against the NYC bakery.
The restaurant has since fired back in response, stating that their initial refusal to serve Whoopi Goldberg was not "because of political" reasons.
Whoopi Goldberg Claims NYC Restaurant Refused To Take Her Order
On Wednesday's episode of "The View," Goldberg claimed that a New York City bakery declined to take her birthday dessert order because of her "politics."
The outspoken TV host made the revelation while she took a moment to celebrate her special day with co-hosts Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Joy Behar, and Sara Haines, with the ladies digging into some Charlotte Russe desserts, which Goldberg said was her mom's favorite growing up.
"Now, I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me," Goldberg said on the show, drawing strong reactions from the audience and co-hosts.
She continued, "They said that their ovens had gone down, all kinds of stuff, but folks went and got them anyway, which is why I'm not telling you who made them."
The "Ghost" actress then added that her order wasn't taken not because she's a woman but rather because "they did not like my politics."
"But that's okay because you know what? Listen, this is my mother's celebration. Pick these up and celebrate with me and my mom. Thank you, everyone, for celebrating my birthday today," she stated, per the New York Post.
The Restaurant Denied The Actress' Accusation
Although the "Sister Act" star refused to name the restaurant, Entertainment Weekly identified it as Holtermann's Bakery, a locals' go-to spot in New York.
The establishment's owner, Jill Holtermann, refuted Goldberg's claims, telling the news outlet that "it was not because of political" reasons but because "we were having trouble with our boilers."
"I said to Whoopi, 'I can't do it right now,'" she explained. "'We have so many things going on with my boiler,' because the building is from 1930, so, when she called me, I had no idea [if we could] be baking everything."
Holtermann said that when Goldberg had ordered the desserts two weeks ago, the baker "didn't want to make a commitment that I can't carry through" as a result of the technical difficulties the bakery was experiencing at the time.
She then shared that she eventually made 50 treats, which were picked up at 7:30 am on Wednesday, insisting that the issues had nothing to do with Goldberg's political views.
Whoopi Goldberg Loves To Be 'Eaten From Time To Time'
Elsewhere on the show, Goldberg seemingly disclosed one of her bedroom preferences that left the audience in stitches.
The EGOT recipient was standing in front of a giant wheel of cheese with her buried in it when she went through a list of her favorite products in honor of her birthday.
Her co-host Sara Haines said to her, "I always wanted my face on cheese," before Goldberg responded, "I like to be eaten from time to time," sending the audience into a rousing round of laughter.
"Never mind," she continued. "This is a wheel of authentic Parmigiano Reggiano from Italy, and this has been aged for 24 months, and it's a testament to Italian tradition and quality."
The Actress Says She Understands What It Means To Be In The Working Class
The outspoken Donald Trump critique explained that she understood the plight of working-class Americans who have to work hard for their daily bread, noting that she is "working for a living" and would quit the show if she had "all the money in the world."
"I appreciate that people are having a hard time. Me, too. I work for a living," she said, per Business Insider. "If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here, okay? So, I'm a working person, you know?"
"My kid has to feed her family. My great-granddaughter has to be fed by her family. I know it's hard out there," Goldberg continued.
"I love what she [Ocasio-Cortez] did. Yay. We talk to people all the time who say, 'This is what's bothering me.' But the thing that's bothering everybody should not be the thing that puts 85 percent of other people in danger. I think that's what we're saying," she explained.
Whoopi Goldberg Came Under Fire For Her 'Working For A Living' Remarks
The actress's comments did not resonate well with people on social media, who proceeded to slam her, labeling her "out of touch."
One person on X (formerly Twitter) said, "I've listened to Whoopi far too many times. Most of the time she has done virtually no prep on the segment they are talking about... I'd like her to define what she means (by) actually 'working for a living.'"
Another stated, "The way these a--hole celebrities spend, I don't doubt she thinks she's just getting by."
A third person commented, "This is how out of touch these people are with Main Street America. Our struggles, our values, our way of life! And they give us advice through their lens! Unrelatabe!"
