George Clooney is reportedly stepping back from politics after being partly blamed for Kamala Harris' defeat at the just-concluded presidential election.

The actor wrote an op-ed in July in which he called for President Joe Biden to step down before sharing his endorsement of Harris.

During the election, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump got endorsements from Hollywood stars, with the Vice President getting a lot more support from A-listers like George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

The "Oceans Eleven" actor is set to temporarily pause his activeness in the political space as he feels he is being used as a "scapegoat" for those who are looking for a person to blame for the Democrats' loss.

Clooney had thrown his weight behind Harris after penning an op-ed in The New York Times calling for Joe Biden to step down as the party's nominee.

However, with Harris' landslide loss to Trump, Clooney has become the target of backlash from some quarters, who are pointing fingers at him for the party's failure.

"George feels that the backlash he is getting for Kamala losing is not at all warranted," a source told the Daily Mail. "He thinks it is completely unfair to try and make him a scapegoat for her loss."

They continued, "He has backed the Democratic Party and invested so much time and money into them, but he is going to take a step back for now. He feels very disheartened."

Even after Biden backed out of the race, The "ER" actor didn't immediately push for Harris to be adopted as a replacement because he wanted the "Democratic party to take its time before coming to a decision."

"When he wrote his op-ed, George did not say 'Biden is not fit to be president choose Kamala.' The Democrats jumped on Kamala, and within days, she was the candidate," the source said, per the Daily Mail.

"George believes that they should have taken a step back and looked at their options. That is why he did not endorse her right away," they added.

Trump eventually emerged as the winner of the November 5 election in a sweeping victory that saw him garner 312 electoral votes to Harris's 226.

The "Up in The Air" actor is a known supporter of the Democratic party and had often used his platform to call for support for Harris in the days leading to the elections.

In July, he wrote an op-ed calling on Biden to step down from the race, declaring the party was not "going to win in November with this president."

Although he helped Biden raise $30 million at a fundraiser for his reelection campaign at the time, Clooney started supporting Harris shortly after she declared her intention to run.

However, Clooney's write-up has been met with strong backlash as many blame him for Harris's loss at the just-concluded election.

An X user wrote, "He helped remove Joe Biden, which causally preceded the loss of Kamala Harris. Thank you, Mr. Clooney. You may now go."

Another fan said, "Too late loser. We've had it with your smugness. You're old, and it's time for you to move back to Europe."

Veteran-led political commentator group altNOAA posted on X, "Someone bring me George Clooney. We need to have a...talk."

A fourth X user penned, "He's had a tough time ever since Trump basically called him a midget."

"Trump should not forget to thank the Hollywood celebrities. Especially George Clooney," another person shared.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 63-year-old actor weighed in on the impact of his write-up in September, where he lauded Biden for stepping down for Harris to run.

Clooney was at a press event alongside co-star Brad Pitt for Jon Watt's "Wolfs," which premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

He thanked Biden for "saving democracy" with the decision to call it quits and praised it as "the most selfless thing that anybody has done since George Washington."

"The person who should be applauded is the President who did the most selfless thing that anybody has done since George Washington," Clooney told the conference.

Clooney further praised Biden for stepping down, stating that it was a "selfless" act and the most difficult thing to do.

"All of the machinations that got us there, none of that's going to be remembered, and it shouldn't be," the actor noted.

He continued, "What should be remembered is the selfless act of someone who did the hardest thing to do. It's very hard to let go of power — we know that; we've seen it all around the world — and for someone to say, I think there's a better way forward, all the credit goes to him, and that's really the truth."

Meanwhile, all eyes have now turned to several celebrities who purposed to leave the country should Trump emerge victorious in the polls.

Sharon Stone, Cher, Amy Schumer, and Barbra Streisand are examples of stars who said they would rather leave the country than stay another four years of a Trump presidency.
