Martha Stewart shared very candid details about her marriage to her ex-husband, Andrew Stewart, whom she was married to for almost 30 years.
In a clip from her upcoming documentary, she recalled kissing a stranger during her honeymoon; however, the celebrity chef claims it was not an "unfaithful" act.
Martha Stewart also revealed that she had an affair during her marriage and noted that it was "very easy" for her to keep it a secret.
Martha Stewart Recalls Kissing A Stranger At A Cathedral During Her Honeymoon
In the lifestyle guru's upcoming Netflix documentary "Martha," she recalled going on a five-month extended honeymoon in Europe after she and her then-husband, Andrew Stewart, tied the knot in 1961.
According to Fox News, Stewart revealed that she and Andrew arrived in Florence, Italy, the night before Easter. She noted that she went to the Duomo Florence Cathedral alone during the trip while Andrew remained in their hotel room.
"He didn't have any interest in going to the Duomo with me," Stewart told director R. J. Cutler of her ex-husband. "Listening to that amazing music in the cathedral… It was a very romantic place, crowded with tourists, and I met this very handsome guy."
The 83-year-old continued, "He didn't know I was married. I was this waif of a girl hanging out in the cathedral on Easter Eve. He was emotional. I was emotional. It's just because it was an emotional place. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced. An expansive dome. So beautiful and paintings all around you."
"It was like nothing I had ever done before," she added. "And so why not kiss a stranger?"
Martha Stewart Claims She Was Not Being 'Unfaithful' By Kissing A Stranger
After hearing the story, director Cutler asked the celebrity chef if she was being "naughty" and if kissing a stranger during her honeymoon was "infidelity."
"Were you being, you know, what's the word I'm looking for?" Cutler said, to which Stewart interjected, "Naughty?"
"Was it naughty, or was it infidelity?" the director clarified.
"Neither," Stewart stated. "It was neither naughty nor unfaithful. It was just emotional at the moment. That's how I looked at it. And it was exciting because, I mean, it was a very emotional place. I wish we could all experience such an evening."
Stewart and Andrew first crossed paths in 1960 thanks to a blind date arranged by his sister. He was a 23-year-old Yale Law School student at the time, and she was a student at Barnard College in New York City.
After dating for a year, the two got married and welcomed their daughter, Alexis Stewart, four years later.
The Former Couple's Marriage Was Filled With Affairs
After breaking up in 1987, Andrew and Stewart formally filed for divorce in 1990.
The lifestyle guru revealed that Andrew had multiple affairs during their marriage and disclosed that she had also cheated on him in her interview with Cutler for the Netflix documentary.
"He was not satisfied at home," Stewart noted about her former spouse. "I don't know how many different girlfriends he had during this time, but I think there were quite a few."
"Young women, listen to my advice, if you're married and your husband starts to cheat on you, he's a piece of sh-t," she shared. "Get out of that marriage."
"But I couldn't do that. I couldn't walk away," Stewart added about her ex-husband's infidelity.
When Cutler asked, "Didn't you have an affair early on?" the chef answered, "Yeah, but I don't think Andy ever knew about that."
The Lifestyle Guru Admits She Had A 'Brief Affair' With An 'Attractive Irishman'
In the interview for the documentary, director Cutler told Stewart that her ex-husband claimed he only cheated because she "strayed" even though the chef said that he was unaware of her affair.
"He did say he knew about it," Cutler noted, per Fox News. "He did?" Stewart questioned, prompting Cutler to reply, "Yes, you had confessed to him."
The director continued, "He says he didn't stray from the marriage until you told him you had already strayed."
Stewart then stated that it wasn't true and that she only had a "very brief affair with a very attractive Irishman."
"And it was just nothing. It was nothing," Stewart said. "In terms of— it would never have broken up a marriage. I would never have broken up a marriage for it."
She reiterated that "it was nothing," comparing her short affair to "the kiss in the cathedral" during her honeymoon.
Martha Stewart Said Getting Divorced Was A 'Terrible Thing'
In a 2020 interview with People Magazine, Stewart revealed that getting divorced from Andrew was difficult for her.
"Getting divorced was a terrible thing for me because we were the first to divorce in my family," the chef said at the time. "And that we haven't spoken since the divorce is even more painful. But I'm very strong, and I'm very motivated to get on with life."
Stewart added, "I have survived the rigors of time, of marriage, of childbearing, of building a business from scratch. I have survived very nicely, and I think I make the most of it."
