Taylor Swift released her seventh album Lover on August 23 to huge sales and rave reviews, selling 885,000 copies in her first week. While there was quite a bit of drop off in the second week — between 185,000 and 200,000 — it’s still a massive achievement for a star at the height of her powers.
However, there is a huge chance that the metal band Tool will knock her out of the top spot on the Billboard charts. Returning after a 13 year hiatus, Tool’s Fear Inoculum is on track to sell 240,000 and 260,000 copies in their opening weekend, knocking Swift’s Lover out of the top spot. Welcome back, dudes!
Swift fans, a.k.a. Swifties, are taking the news harder than possibly Taylor herself and showed their age in the process. Not only are they encouraging everyone who will listen to go buy Lover, none of them seem to have heard of Tool.
While there probably isn’t a lot of overlap in the Venn diagram of Tool fans and Swifties, maybe it’s time for them to do a little music history and not go to bat for millionaires who really don’t need their help.
