The film is based on a 1980 novel by South African-born writer J. M. Coetzee, centered around a magistrate in a small colonial town.

While Depp handles his professional life on foreign soil, his legal team has been hard at work on the domestic front in the ongoing battle with ex-wife, Amber Heard.
As we reported, Heard recently went to court and requested certain details of her ongoing lawsuit to be kept private, out of fear she will be "demonized" over information that may be made public.
Depp's legal team fired back, making it clear that his entire defense is based upon details, which he describes as "objective facts."
The fight between the former couple is extremely personal, and Depp's legal team most recently accused Heard of, "falsely accusing Mr. Depp of abuse in an apparent effort to promote her acting career and masquerade as an 'abuse survivor' while damaging the reputation of her former husband."
