How Matthew McConaughey Is Bringing The Worm Back To Tequila

Matthew McConaughey's Pantalones Organic Tequila is reintroducing an iconic tradition—the worm.

That’s right; the brand is bringing back the nostalgic worm that was once a staple at the bottom of many agave spirit bottles. While some believe the worm enhances the flavor, others hold more superstitious beliefs, claiming it brings good luck and strength to the lucky person who discovers it in their drink.

Either way, Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila have added their signature cheeky, playful Pantalones twist to the traditional worm in tequila.

On October 21—fittingly National Earthworm Day—Pantalones unveiled a video dedicated to bringing the worm back to tequila.

But this time, it’s not the worm in the bottle—it’s the dance move! Because, let's be honest, after a couple sips of a Fancy Pants cocktail, we might just find ourselves on the floor doing the worm, too.

As shared with The Blast, the brand is also debuting a delicious worm-themed cocktail—but don’t worry, no critters are involved! This flavorful concoction—cleverly titled Wide Leg Wiggler—is a refreshing mango margarita with a worm-salted rim, offering a fun nod to tradition without the squirm.

Ingredients:

• 1.5 oz Pantalones Organic Blanco Tequila
• 1.5 oz Mango Nectar
• 1 oz Pineapple Juice
• 0.5 oz Lime Juice
• 0.5 oz Agave Syrup
• Worm Salt (rim)

Before we get wiggling, dip the rim of your glass into lime juice and run it through worm salt.

Combine Pantalones Organic Blanco Tequila, mango nectar, pineapple juice, fresh lime juice, and agave syrup in an ice-cold shaker. Wiggle, shimmy, and shake your mango margarita like you're warming up for the dance floor. Pour your drink into the worm-salted rimmed glass and get limber.

The couple debuted their brand in the fall of 2023, offering Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo tequilas. According to a press release, this award-winning line is "crafted to celebrate having fun, doing good, and not taking life too seriously."

In its first year on the market, the Añejo tequila earned the prestigious double gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a distinction awarded only when all judges unanimously agree it’s the best in its class. Additionally, their Blanco tequila secured a gold medal, while the Reposado was honored with a bronze.

Finding the perfect elements for their ideal libation was a long journey, but nothing could stop the McConaugheys from achieving their goal. Their dedication and persistence ensured Pantalones Organic Tequila delivers the exact flavor and quality they envisioned from the start.

“We'd been saving all the samples that we had of every iteration of the tequila. And we had forty-seven. At one point we laid them all out and we had forty-seven of them,” Camila told Country Living. “We would try it separately from each other and then together, and we wouldn’t say anything. Blind taste tests, switch ‘em around."

"As we got closer, like [samples] thirty to forty-six, we had some, we were like, that’s getting close, but the 47th was when we went, bam,” Matthew added, with a snap of his fingers. “That’s the one.”
