Suzanne Somers remains a crucial part of her husband Alan Hamel's life, as he continues to share rare details about their over-a-decade relationship.
Although the couple enjoyed a blissful marriage lasting 46 years, their love story did not start with them on the best terms. Instead, the Canadian film producer recently confessed that he and his late wife butted heads more often than not.
Alan Hamel's recollection of his rocky start with Suzanne Somers comes on the first anniversary of her death. The Hollywood veteran died on October 15, 2023, following a years-long battle with cancer — a tragic demise that occurred a day before her 77th birthday.
Alan Hamel Recalls Repeatedly Fighting With Suzanne Somers
In a new interview, Hamel revealed that he and Somers experienced a turbulent start in their relationship, admitting: "For the first few years of our love affair, we fought like mad dogs. But we always returned to our passionate love for one another."
Hamal stressed that their love for each other outweighed their differences, noting: "After one of our fights, Suzanne said to me, 'No matter how bad it gets, let's never break up.' And we never did." He shared more about their relationship, adding:
"We always went to sleep every night holding hands, and in the morning, I would always awaken a few minutes before Suzanne, and I would just lie there, staring at her beautiful face."
According to Hamel, their bond persisted during Somers' years-long battle with cancer as she "fought until her last breath" to stay alive. He was with her down to her last moment when she died holding his hand, per Page Six.
The Doting Husband Believes His Late Wife Is Still With Him
While reflecting on their relationship, Hamel praised Somers as a woman who was "incredibly wise and street savvy for her years." His sweet words continued:
"The other wisdom from Suzanne was that we should 'surrender to one another' — I would do what she wanted to do, and she would do what I wanted to do."
Although his wife left a year ago, Hamel believes Somers has not left his side — claiming she visits him in the form of a hummingbird. The lovebirds first met in 1969 when he hosted the game show "The Anniversary Game."
Hamel And Somers 'Loved Dating'
When they met on the TV show, Somers served as a prize model, but Hamel was more in love with how she flaunted her beauty off-camera than on the set. He noted the pair enjoyed every moment of their pre-marital relationship, saying:
"We loved dating. Suzanne would get all incredible looking wearing one of her sparkling minidresses — she had killer legs — nighttime makeup and the right color Manolos, and we'd go to one of our favorite, intimate French restaurants."
"Le Vallauris in Palm Springs was always so special to us. Order a bottle of great wine and spend the evening looking at each other and silently saying how great is the love we have," Hamel fondly recalled. He echoed similar sentiments about his love for Somers during a 2023 interview.
The Canadian Producer Previously Revealed Their Unique Morning Routine
Last December, The Blast shared the special morning routine Hamel and Somers enjoyed doing together. The doting husband revealed the activity stemmed from their residence alongside the California mountains in Malibu and Palm Springs.
The early morning routine "involved hiking to the top of one of the mountains, where there was a creek and a large flat rock in the middle of the creek." Hamel noted the process took about two hours, and by the time they arrived, "The rock had been warmed by the morning sun."
"[Somers] would have our lunch on the rock and then take a one-hour nap on the rock and then hike back down and go to work," Hamel continued, revealing that he bought a pair of Timberland boots for his late wife to wear on their hiking trips.
Suzanne Somers Died Before Her 77th Birthday
Somers took her final breath a day before her 77th birthday, forcing her loved ones to change their plans to honor her age milestone. Hamel revealed they opted to celebrate her memory on the night of her death, saying:
"We actually toasted last night. We had, I think, 12 of us here, and all toasted Suzanne. I'm positive we'll do something today. I don't know what it will be, but it will involve a lot of cake because Suzanne was crazy for cake."
Somers' family and friends reconvened on November 30 to "celebrate Suzanne's incredible life" and her remarkable Hollywood career. At the time, Hamel noted he shared a "passionate and beautiful last kiss" with his late wife.
Rest in peace, Suzanne Somers.
