R. Kelly's name continues to get dragged through the mud for unspeakable acts, with his daughter joining the list of alleged victims.
Buku Abi, born Joann Kelly, recently recounted the horrific details of the childhood trauma she allegedly endured due to her father. She is one of the three children Andrea Kelly welcomed with the convicted singer before their divorce.
R. Kelly's ex-wife and three children shared their stories on TVEI Streaming Network's new two-episode documentary "R. Kelly's Karma: A Daughter's Journey." However, the entertainer has denied all allegations of wrongdoing through his attorney.
R. Kelly's Daughter Accused Him of 'Touching Her' While She Was Asleep
Buku addressed the alleged abuse in the second episode of the documentary, recalling the incident happened when she was 8 or 9. However, she did not tell her mother until 2009, when she was 10, in her words:
"I just remember waking up to him touching me. And I didn't know what to do, so I just kind of laid there, and I pretended to be asleep."
When Buku finally told Andrea about the alleged incident, she recalled they went to the police and filed a complaint as "Jane Doe." Unfortunately, she noted: "They couldn't prosecute him because I waited too long. So, at that point in my life, I felt like I said something for nothing."
Buku, per PEOPLE, reflected on how her father's alleged abuse had affected her in the first episode, confessing, "He was my everything. For a long time, I didn't even want to believe that it happened. I didn't know that even if he was a bad person that he would do something to me."
The Alleged Victim Was 'Too Scared' To Tell Anyone
Buku stressed that the alleged incident took a toll on her mentally and emotionally, stating, "I was too scared to tell anybody. I was too scared to tell my mom." She continued:
"I really feel like that one millisecond completely just changed my whole life and changed who I was as a person and changed the sparkle I had and the light I used to carry."
"After I told my mom, I didn't go over there anymore; my brother [Robert] and sister [Jaah], we didn't go over there anymore. And even up until now, I struggle with it a lot," Buku lamented. Her mother finalized her divorce from R. Kelly in 2009 and has also accused him of abuse.
The Singer's Daughter Battled Suicidal Thoughts After The Alleged Incident
The aftermath of the alleged abuse left Buku struggling with her mental health. "I just got to a point where I didn't care anymore. I didn't care if I lived or died," she said, recalling the day her mother noticed her poor state in a Target bathroom.
"I was washing my hands, and she saw that my wrists were all cut up, and she just immediately dropped everything, and she was asking like, 'What's going on? Are you OK?'" Buku recounted, noting she "broke down" at her mother's concern.
"I had to tell her, like, 'I don't think I'm OK. I don'tthink that I can do this. I don't think that I'm gonna make it through to live out the rest of my life,'" she lamented. Fortunately, Buku overcame this challenging period, and at 26, she is preparing to welcome a child.
The Convicted Singer Denied The Abuse Allegations
Following the scathing allegations against R. Kelly, his attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, refuted the claims in a statement. The legal rep confirmed Buku's narrative of filing a report about the abuse with her mother, noting:
"Mr. Kelly vehemently denies these allegations. His ex-wife made the same allegation years ago, and it was investigated by the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services and was unfounded."
Bonjean further slammed the documentary's producers, stressing that "the 'filmmakers,' whoever they are, did not reach out to Mr. Kelly or his team to even allow him to deny these hurtful claims."
Fans React To The New Claims Against R. Kelly
The documentary sparked outrage against R. Kelly on social media platforms like X, with many believing Buku's claims. "I knew it. I knew it. I hate she had to go through that," someone lamented, with a conspiracy theorist wondering:
"Is she the one that ran away when she was 13, which happens to be the age R. Kelly likes his victims?"
"This isn't surprising but I hate she went through that. It's one thing to go through sexual abuse period! it's a added on pile of sh-t to know it was your own f—king parent that did it to you like that one detail reallyf-cks with your head. I'm glad his where he belongs," a third penned.
R. Kelly is currently behind bars serving 19 years of his two sentences concurrently. He will reportedly be eligible for release in 2045.
