Sophie Turner clarified a recent comment about motherhood that sparked concerns online.
The actress recently said in an interview that being a single mother was a "struggle," but many misconstrued her statement as a reference to herself.
Sophie Turner has now revealed that her comments were directed at her character Joan in the newly released ITV series of the same name.
Sophie Turner Clarifies 'Struggling Single Mother' Remark
The "Game of Thrones" actress took to her Instagram Stories to address what she calls a "misquote" by several publications following her interview with The Sunday Times.
In her update, she stated that she was referring to her role in the upcoming crime series "Joan," in which she portrays the real-life Joan "The Godmother" Hannington, and not herself.
"I have been widely misquoted today in publications where I have 'stated' that 'it's such a struggle being a single mother," Turner wrote. "I'd like to clarify that I was talking about the character of Joan that I play and was not referring to myself, which is obvious from the original interview in the Sunday Times Culture section."
"I am very fortunate personally to have a lot of help around me, which is not the case for a lot of people," she continued, noting that she "applauds all single mothers doing it alone."
Why The Actress Talked About The 'Struggle' Of Single Motherhood
Her statement comes after her recent conversation with the news outlet about her new show, "Joan," in which she alluded to single motherhood being a "struggle" amid her split from her ex-husband Joe Jonas.
"Joan changed me quite a lot. From utter desperation comes so much will and ambition," she told the publication. "The series came around at a time in my life when I had to be ambitious and I had to have such strong will and fight against the forces. She gave me a lot of strength."
"If I hadn't been a mother, I don't know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it. It's such a struggle being a single mother," she added.
In Turner's series, she stars as Joan, a woman who goes from being a housewife to a petty offender, a diamond thief, and a criminal mastermind.
Turner's character had to escape her husband because he was abusive but must place her daughter in child care before she sets out to get back on her feet. She soon manages to get a job in a jewelry store, where she steals her first diamond.
Sophie Turner And Joe Jonas' Split
The 28-year-old actress was locked in a contentious custody battle with her ex, Joe Jonas, over their daughters Willa and Delphine after he filed to divorce her in September 2023.
According to People Magazine, a Florida judge ruled that their marriage is "irretrievably broken," with a legal document noting that the agreement is "in the best interests of the parties and this family."
Details of their settlement have been kept under wraps. The judge also allowed Turner and Jonas to waive the 20-day waiting period for final judgment, saying, "The marriage between the parties is dissolved, and the parties are restored to the status of being single."
The "Dark Phoenix" actress recently went Instagram official with her boyfriend, aristocrat Peregrine Pearson.
Sophie Turner Says Joe Jonas Split Was The 'Worst Few Days' Of Her Life
In the June edition of British Vogue Magazine, Turner opened up about how challenging the aftermath of her divorce from the singer was.
"Those were the worst few days of my life," she told the publication. "I remember I was on set, I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn't leave. My kids were in the States, and I couldn't get to them because I had to finish Joan. And all these articles started coming out …"
At the time, speculations were rife that their split was caused by her being a bad mom, especially after photos circulated of her at a wrap party for Joan.
However, she had to remind herself that "none of this is true" and that she was "a good mum."
The Actress Is 'Still In Shock'
The actress revealed that she was stunned by the stories about her that circulated online during the period of her divorce from Jonas.
"I mean, it's unfathomable the amount of people that will just make sh-t up and put it up based on a picture," Turner said. "A picture might tell a thousand words, but it's not my story. It felt like I was watching a movie of my life that I hadn't written, hadn't produced, or starred in. It was shocking. I'm still in shock."
"There were some days that I didn't know if I was going to make it. I would call my lawyer saying, 'I can't do this. I just can't,'" Turner recalled. "And then, finally, after two weeks of me being in a rut, she reminded me that it was my children I was fighting for."
